My EBF LO has had smelly loose watery green/brown stools the past probably 2 weeks. There are no seeds and it soaks through the diaper almost completely, just a film left on the top. It actually stains her cloth diaper microfiber inserts a dark green/black color. She poops 5-6 times a day, which really isn’t more than she was going. We were at the IL on Thanksgiving and had to take her to the pedi there on Friday because she had a small amount of blood when she pooped that morning. He said she had mild colitis and said it may be something in my diet causing it since she had no other symptoms. I have since stopped eating dairy because I had a bad dairy allergy as an infant but her stools have not changed although I haven’t noticed anymore blood. Yesterday (Monday) she had her 4 month checkup with her primary physician who pretty much pooh-poohed it away saying she was gaining fine and had no other symptoms other than the poop itself…blah…blah…blah. We have a few issues with her and breastfeeding knowledge is one of them, so I’m worried that we’re missing something and since I value the opinions you girls have I have a few questions for ya’ll…

First, has anyone out there had this same problem? I need reassurance everything is fine.

If it is a dairy allergy will it really take 2 weeks of being dairy free before I’ll see a change, and does this sound like it could be a dairy allergy?

I thought that as an EBF baby gets older they poop less often sometimes going days. Why at 4 months is she still going 5-6 times a day? The pedi said it’s normal. Is there anyone else’s LO that poops this much?

Thanks girls and sorry this is so long…totally didn’t mean it to be :)

From the little I know about this kind of thing my first thought was dairy allergy when you mentioned blood in the stool. Someone else may have more information on this.

However, from an adults perspective who has a dairy allergy herself, I can attest that it can take up to 30days or longer to completely rid your body of all dairy. I also will say that any amt, even trace amts, of dairy can come through your milk and effect the baby. So I would think you should give it more than 2wks before you can rule out the dairy theory.

I would say if your baby has always pooped 5-6times a day than thats just your babies version of normal. In this aspect, I think all babies are so very different. The only time I saw DD's poops slow down was around 9mo. when she really started to get interested in solids. Her norm was 3x a day and now its usually one...but can be 3 some days.

I hope you figure things out!!

Hello

I just wanted to let you know that my son has the same problem. He has greenish, brownish, yellowish stools and they are loose and mucusy. I also went to the doctor and she said since he is gaining well he is fine. Its been like this for two months. I tried the dairy-free thing but I don't think that is it for my son. He is a happy baby so I have come to terms with it. I even emailed Dr. Jack Newman and he also said as long as baby is gaining not to worry so I stopped worrying.
I hope everything is going well. Let me know how you and your daughter are doing. Its nice to know you are not the only one out there with the same problems. :)

The green, moucusy stooling is usually a sign of a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. Here is a great poop link: www.drjaygordon.com/development/pediatricks/poop.asp

Not to be gross but blood in the stool can indicate other things. Did it seem to be streaked through the pooh or perhaps could it have been coated on the outer rim? Was it bright red? Coating the outer rim can indicate an anal fissure or small tear which can be common.

I tend to agree with the DR who says a one time incident would not be enough for me to change my diet.
