What are your thoughts on this?

As the kids (nieces and nephews, possible my children too) and adults are getting older and don't really need anything I'm considering donating money to a good cause in their name for Christmas. I need to talk it over with DH, I think he may object, mostly about the kids. I hate just giving gift cards or cash, I thought this way it would mean something. BUT... I'm afraid that it will mean more to me than to them.

Thoughts? Discuss.

I'm not a teen now, I meant when I was a teen. Bad wording.

Visit this site. I get my stocking stuffers from here every year. The kids get 2 tangerines, a santa box from Sees, a small toy, and a certificate from one of these: Send 2 girls to school, Dolls for refugees, clean water kits, etc. I always get my grandparents a certificate from one of those listed on the site. Last year it was money to help fund a school in Asia somewhere.

For teens, I would get them a large chocolate bar and wrap it with a certificate. The adults would just get the certificate in a card.

I think it's a nice thought, but I agree that it would mean more to you than them. At my age, I would be honored to receive a gift like that. 15 years ago, not so much.

I think overall it's a good thing but I think it's a rare kid that would appreciate it. Most kids are going to prefer to have the money or the gift card. Just being honest.

That's kind of what I was thinking. They are 13, 8, 6 and 6. I myself have a 14 y.o. and 2 y.o.

I'll go check that out. A smaller gift with the certificate may stunt the blow a little. I really want to start this with my own kids and try to teach them that there is so much more to the Christmas spirit than the "gime, gime".

I'm also considering volunteering our time somewhere. Although with a two year old, I'm not sure where it would be. Maybe a nursing home?

Or, you could just shop that same site I posted for teen-friendly stuff.

http://shop.thehungersite.com/store/category.do?categoryId=374&link=Store_THS_LeftNav_374&siteId=220

Each purchase can provide food, shelter, money for research, etc. depending upon which site you visit. That way they get something and someone else benefits too.
