It figures, this close to Christmas, doesn't it?

We were driving MIL home from the airport last night and were bebopping along to Johnny Cash when...BAM! We smashed into this 200 lb buck. It slid over the hood, crumpling it, and busted both headlights. It dented in the passenger side door. I saw the deer flying through the air past my window.

We were out in the middle of Nowheresville and limped down the road (with no lights) to someone's house. Thank goodness the owner's son was there (she was a little old lady) and he came out and helped us excavate broken glass, bits of grill, and hair from the front of the van.

We had to call the cops, of course, for an accident report. The cop was thrilled and loaded the deer into his suv.

Aw shoot Sasha that does suck. DH has only had two minor incidences with deer. One tried to jump the hood of the car and dented in the fender a bit the next ran straight into the side and broke off the rearview mirror.

They didn't even let you keep the deer? I think you should have been able to as a consultation prize.

Aww crap! I'm so sorry. Will there be insurance to take care of most of it? (and hopefully not a high deductible)

I hit a buck 5 years ago in a little Chevy Prism (like Corolla) while going 60mph. It was also at the worst possible time. I also had my two oldest kids with me. I could see the imprint of his body in my hood and it smashed my passenger side of the windshield. He managed to run off, though. Later I found a piece of antler in my car on the floorboard.

When I was a kid my mom's friend hit a deer and totalled her car. Not fun. But we did all get deer meat for our freezers at least.

Sorry you hit the deer though. :( My MIL hit one yesterday too. Thankfully, it didn't seem to seriously hurt the car or the deer at least.

You'd think so! BIL hit a moose once (imagine the mess his car was!) and he had meat for a long time!

I'm sure we could have kept the deer but I'm not a big one for venison. I am glad that someone is using him, though.

I have full coverage so I *hope* they won't give me any problems. My brother, who is a gearhead, looked it over and said that the damage appears to be cosmetic.

I'm so scared I'm going to hit one. A few years ago there was a fatality here when a dad and a young boy were driving home from baseball practice and hit a deer. The boy was unhurt.

Glad you are all ok.

when I was younger and drove my green truck I had a deer run into teh side of the truck at a stop sign and kill itself. not fun.

I hope your insurance is not crappy about and pays for it. I would take it as a sign to never take your mil anywhere again lol.

Sasha, if you have full coverage, you should make sure you replace your carseats.

What impeccable timing. It HAD to happen with your MIL in the car.

Your insurance should cover it, especially since you have full coverage.

Oh gosh that just sucks. I'd have nightmares. I hope replacement of everything goes smoothly. Heck there is no statement other than yours to take and I'm pretty sure the deer did not have an insurance carrier that you will need to negotiate with.

Good Luck

Deer do tend to run around with no insurance.

Sorry, Sasha, are you sore? SOmetimes the day after you hurt a whole hell of a lot more than you thought.

You Killed Blitzen!

I'm sorry about your van. That really sucks.

That is why it is so important to carry uninsured coverage.

I do hope no one is sore the day after. Whiplash is less than pleasant.

Glad you are all okay. I don't blame the deer, just the mil.

Aww. That's awful.

I'm worried about that. I had to stop 6 times in one day for deer in my neighborhood.

Thank goodness you guys were ok and I hope the damage is just cosmetic.

I've never hit a deer, they've all ran into me. I've got 3 dents on the sides of my truck from deer. I just hope that I never actually drive into an elk, because as low as my truck is, it would come in the windshield and land in my lap.

On our honeymoon in Yellowstone we saw what was left of a Honda Civic CRV (that little compact car) after it hit a bison. It was amazing that both the driver and passenger were not killed. There was nothing left of the windshield and the hood was completely crumpled. We were not speed before, but we slowed down especially at night. Us So Cal people are not used to anything bigger than a dog.

That really sucks. I hope that your insurance company don't give you any trouble. I understand how you feel though.

About 1 yeear ago we were living at his apartment complex and a few days before thanksgiving someone busted out the drivers side window of our SUV and stole our DVD/CD player from our car. Of course the insurance company wouldn't cover any of it adn we had to eat the cost and fix it. The sad thing is we had full coverage but it didn't meet the deductible even though the DVD/CD player was an $800 piece of equiptment. And our deductible was $500

I hope that you get your car fixed soon.

If the car was able to be driven away from the accident why would she have to replace the car seats?

I'm glad you were all ok sasha. I remeber we hit a deer when I was little and I was scared to go anywhere at night for months. I am still scared now as an adult too.

3 girls, I was told that no matter how minor the accident, you have to replace the car seats, because the integrity of the seat has been compromised. At the last car seat check here, they replaced my car seats because I had backed into a tree going 5 mph.

I'm sorry that happened to you. It sucks. I've been there, done that. My poor van has already hit two deer (well, technically the second deer hit me). Dh was driving the first time, and my van wasn't even drivable (the van was almost new then). The second time the deer hit me in the side (six days before I broke my arm), and I still haven't been able to get it fixed. I can't even open the passenger front door on that side.

Check the manuals. All manufacturers, except Britax and Compass, require replacement after any crash.

And we wonder why insurance rates are going up.....
