So yesterday DS had his one year check up and he's only in the 3rd percentile for weight gain. My Dr. was quite concerned. He's always been on the low side, but never that low. So she told us to make sure he has a very high fat diet. Give him lots of cheese and yogurt. Give him homo milk instead of 2%. I still bf, but want to start the weaning process slowly. Take out one feeding every 2 weeks and still keep his feeding before bedtime and still nurse at night. I, myself was getting a bit worried about him weight. When I hold him and he isn't wearing a shirt I can feel his ribs in the back. He doesn't fit into any 12 mo. pants, the waist is too big, but the length is too short!! So I was just wondering, what foods can I give him that are high in fat that won't constipate him(he already has a little issue with constipation). He eats ALOT!!!! He never indicates to us that he's full....we just give him what we think is a serving size for him. If we measure out his feedings, for lunch and supper he has half a jar of baby food(the large jars) and for desert he gets half a jar as well. For breakfast he gets about a cup of pablum plus a yogurt. I nurse him 3-4 times a day, plus his night feeding. He gets some animal crackers between meals for a snack. Any help I get would be greatly appreciated!! I should add that he weighed in at 18lbs. 7oz.

Breastmilk changes in content as your baby grows older- did you know this? Some studies have shown very high fat content in breastmilk when the baby is over a year old.

So my point here is that now is probably not the best time to start weaning (unless, of course, there are other issues).

Baby food is not, in general, high in fat. If you are feeding him vegetables or fruits, they likely have no fat at all. The constipation issues may be related to the fact that, unless you ARE feeding veggies or fruits, his diet has no fiber at all.

However, are you sure he is constipated? If he is getting a lot of his calories from breastmilk, he may just have very little left over to excrete. If he isn't uncomfortable, and his stool isn't hard and dry, then I'd say he wasn't constipated.

So high fat foods you could offer include avocado, full-fat yoghurt and cheese, almond or sunflower butters. You could offer some fresh fruits (mashed a bit) and how about some fiber? A little brown rice. You could add a little olive oil to the pablum. Spread almond butter on the animal crackers.

I'm starting to wean because I'm back at work, and I'm not even there for the feeding that I'm cutting out. He doesn't very often have baby food, it's normally just table food. He gets fruits and veggies with his lunch and supper everyday. He doesn't really struggle with constipation anymore, more so when he was younger. He goes everyday, sometimes twice a day now.
