I am not sure about the handheld but the Leapster TV sucks. The pen is hard to work. Well at least the one that I bought was. I bought it 2 years ago. David has barely played with it. He plays DH's XBox better.

My son Loved the hand held one, but he also loves learning. If she's not that into learning then it may not be a good idea. My oldest 2 would have never been interested in it.

Ds2 just got one for his 4th birthday, he loves it. I am very impressed with it and love "triyellowgrams" He was playing it and it wanted him to select the parallelogram he wasn't selecting the right shape and it asked him to try again. He did it for a minute then asked big brother for help "I can't do triyellowgrams".
Dd (2yo) wants everything he has I think she is too young but likely not make her wait til 4.

My older kids got Leap Pads when they were three and two. They played with them, and then they didn't, and then they did again. Which is how they are.
The younger kids (now 4 and 21 months) now play with the older kids' LeapPads, and occasionally with the age-appropriate Leap toys, whatever they're called.

Leap Pads and Leapsters are not even on the same playing field :)
My kids would have been bored with Leap Pads but they BOTH LOVE their Leapsters - ds got his when he was almost 2, and dd got hers when she was 3. Ds is almost 4 now and dd is almost 8 and they still play with them a few times a week.
LOVE THEM.
They are excellent and have a good variety of games.

My kids had the leappad, liked it for a while but got bored quickly.
My two oldest kids each got the Leapster L-Max at about 3 or 4 years old. My nearly 9 year old still enjoys playing. So does my 6 year old. My 3 year old just recently discovered it and plays with it every chance she gets. Depending on the games you get, it can be used up to about 4th grade.
