I have a few friends that are pregnant right now, and are planning on nursing. For baby shower gifts I was planning on adding a basket of nursing helpers, even though all you really need is "boobs and a blanket" as my sister says.

I was wondering, what helped with any of you with nursing. For instance, I was dead set on nursing, but Medela Lanolin Ointment saved me that first week (a gift from a friend at my shower).

So, what is your ideal BF paraphernalia? I really want these ladies to get the right start. TIA!

Definitely the lanolin. Also my glider and boppy pillows, though those are a bit hard to put in a basket! And my sleep nursing bras.

Oh, I love the Medela micro steam cleaning bags. So much easier than boiling everything in site when you are pumping or letting someone else feed by a bottle.

I think that is a great idea, I mentioned it to people the first time i was pregnant, but nobody got anything like that for me. I didn't know what i needed, so i was really looking for someone who knew what i needed would get it for me.

I would add some nursing pads, and maybe some milk bags, incase she is planning on pumping and freezing, and of course the lanolin. I would suggest several tubes of lanolin, i used to keep one in the baby's room, and then another in my bathroom, that way i didn't have to chase a tube down all the time.

I loved my boppy! A book called The BFing book of answers by Dr. Jack Newman, a nursing necklace (www.joyzjewelz.com), soothies (www.soothies.com), Lansinoh lanolin and bravado washable breast pads (http://store.nursingmothersupplies.com/cgi-bin/store-mothernursingsupplies/00093.html)!

If you really want to spend some money: throw in a pair of silverette (http://www.breastfeedingheaven.co.uk/silverette/prod_2.html) and a nursing gown (http://www.nursinggowns.com/gowns.htm):)

Actually this sight got me through all my nursing difficulties better than anything else did.

That being said I loved using my sling to nurs in the beginning. If you could get a copy, Medications and Mother's Milk by Dr. Hale would be a good idea, I couldn't find a copy of it when I was looking.

I usually do burp cloths, a large chip-clip for holding books open while nursing, breast pads, lansinoh, Soothies or Gerber Soothing Gel pads, Swaddle blanket, water bottle, sticky notes to mark pages or take messages, the Dr. Newman book. I try to find a basket with a handle on it so it's easier to tote around.

You could tuck in a sling of some type if you wanted to add something else.

Something I received was hand lotion, finger nail files and clippers. That way, your friend can do her own nails if hands are free, or trim little one's nails when he or she dozes off.

The micro steam bags and the lanolin are a must and definitely refer her to this site. My son loves the hold a soft blanket and rub it on his face, so maybe one of those small comfort blankets. They are also so cute.

all great ideas...maybe add in a gift card for nursing bras? i know that bravado designs sells them on their website www.bravadodesigns.com ....that way you do'nt have to know sizing and all.

what about a batch of lactation oatmeal cookies for supply and the recipe printed out on a card? a big good water bottle to make sure mom stays hydrated?

Lanolin, nursing pads...

My friend got me a hooter hider, and also a book that is called "Porn for new moms"
It isnt really porn, it has pictures of dads with sayings such as "Yes honey, I will cook the dinner and do the dishes" It is really cute!

just putting this out there...

i got one of those hip nursing covers as a gift and while i thought it was a cute idea at first, i never used it more than once or twice. dd hated being covered up and i hated lugging it along and getting it out and on...and so on. had much better luck nursing in public with a nursing tank and another shirt on top.

just putting in out there...it SEEMED like a good idea when i got it, but now it sits in my closet nearly new and a waste of a lot of somones money ( i think they are about 45 bucks canadian...)

i would have rather recvd a gift card for nursing bras or tanks or a sling ( or $$ toward one of my choosing ) instead.

:) but hey, some people love em. i'll take my Bravado Designs nursing tanks ANY day :)
