I was just wondering if anyone knows, (I'm still going to ask my dr at my next appointment) but i had a c-section 16 months ago and am going to have another one January 28th. I didn't breastfeed my 1st child but i wanted to try with this one. What i am wondering is , is it safe to breastfeed after a c-section? Because of the spinal i don't know if it would be safe...and the pain meds.

yes it is safe, i have had 3 c/s and also bf 3 babies :) im sure you know about the incision pain, that would make it uncomfy for you in certain positions, so i would suggest getting a boppy or something, at the hosp i just asked for an extra pillow and propped the baby up on that to nurse.

the medicine won't affect the milk? Thank you so much

Nope, everything they give you with a c/s should be safe for baby. Likewise, the pain medication you're given is safe as well. As soon as you're alert enough to hold your baby, you should be able to breastfeed. Many women attempt to nurse while they're in post-anesthesia recovery.

the medicine never affected my milk and my kids were all very alert babies. with my 1st i was able to nurse 10 minutes after she was born, the pacu nurse helped me hold her on top of me

I did. It's safe. You may need a little help positioning the baby, but that's all.

I did also!!!

I was given percocet (sp?) at the hospital for pain. I only took like 2 doses and then I was fine. My boppy was great for keeping her off my incision. I also found when I got home and to my own comfy house that side lying was the most comfy to nurse her!

Good luck and enjoy your new little one!

I nursed my little one after my section almost 8 months ago. One thing to note that I was not aware of, that your milk may take an extra day to come in as a result of the surgery (or something). I didn't have to supplement, but I have a friend who felt she did because she didn't have any milk to feed her baby when books say she should have had milk come in. I called my LC here and spoke to her about 4 days pp, and she said give it another day to come in, it sometimes take an extra day after a section.

I also sadly have a friend who just found out I had a section and am nursing. Seems she was told she couldn't nurse because of having a section and she was greatly disappointed to have found out that was certainly not the case.

Good luck!

I have had 2 c-sections and bfed 2 babies. I didn't prepare for my first one and didn't get her for about 4 hours after birth, but we still had an amazing bfing relationship. She was weaned at 14 months. For my 2nd, at pre-op I went around to all the nurses because we were not sure which nurse would be assigned to me and I let them know I would be bfing and I didn't want Jonathan to get any formulas or pacifiers. I lost a lot of blood and was very lethargic, but I got him 1 hour after birth. It was a much better experience. I think the key is communication with hospital staff.

I had a c-section and all the problems I had with nursing have had nothing to do with the actual surgery or pain medication. First off I am very jellous of you women who got to nurse after only 1 hour. I had to wait 3 to nurse my baby and they had supplemented him because of low blood sugar, never even informed me of the situation. This made bf difficult in the beginning and I found all 3 of the LCs at the hospital to be very unhelpful. The nurses were more helpful then the LCs. Educate yourself as much as possible before going in. That is the best thing I can tell you. For my next child I will make sure to tell the docs/nurses that if the baby needs to be supplemented that I want to do it with an SNS.
