I am getting ready to have gallbladder surgery on tuesday and I am wondering how long I will have to wait after being put under general anesthesia till I can put baby back to the breast?

Dh and I are taking baby to the hospital so I can nurse him right beore I go in to the OR. I haven't been able to pump so he will have to get formula until I can nurse him again.

Any ideas how long I have to wait? And, how the drugs might affect the baby? Any certain drug I should try to avoid?

I don't know how this whole thing works.

If you are wake then it means you have no anesthesia left in your body and you can nurse right away.

As for meds, I don't know which ones off the top of my head but you can check kellymom or Hales

My dd had surgery shortly after my third grandchild was born and IIRC, she nursed him before surgery, DSIL gave him the only bottle of pumped milk he ever had, and she nursed him again as soon as she got back to the room.

Considering that some c-section moms are under general anesthesia and they can nurse newborns right when they wake up, I don't think it's a problem.

Your surgery may last a short enough time for him to not have to have any formula! I remember when my appendix ruptured I was in and out in about an hour.

This is what I am hoping for. I am working on trying to at least get one or two bottles pumped. It took me all day yestertday to get one. Hopefully i can get one more today.
