GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) A hospital nursing supervisor says a baby girl who was abandoned outside a fire station in Grand Forks is in good condition.

Fire Department officials reported the infant shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, when the outside temperature in Grand Forks was 18 degrees.

Authorities says the baby was not clothed but had been wrapped in a towel and put in a cardboard box that was left on an electrical transformer outside the fire station.

The baby was taken to Altru Hospital.

Grand Forks police say the investigation is continuing.

that is sad. I remember seeing a tv show about a town somewhere where the people who lived there were very upset over issues like this and they adopted some kind of 'basket' program where volunteers would leave the light on outside with a basket containing blankets. Someone could ring the bell and run knowing they left the baby with a capable person who knew how to help. I would volunteer for that. ......poor baby

Where I live you can hand over a baby to anyone inside any fire, police station or hospital and they can't ask you who you are they just take the baby. I think this is a good idea. I also don't understand why people abandoning babies never just put one in a cart at a grocery store at least it will be warm and someone will find it quickly.

See and thats it. Why leave the baby in the cold? Yea, embarrassing that you can't take care of your child. For whatever reason. But Grand Forks is big enough that the mother could have felt comfortable not being known somewhere. I am just glad the baby was found right away.

People probably don't go into grocery stores because then they would be on camera, and thre would be witnesses.
I do think the safe surrender laws are good ones, within reason, was it Nebraska that had no age limit written into the law and people were driving from states away to leave teens?

I wish the father of a 6 month old little girl (from Cleveland) had a human trait good enough to drop his daughter off. Instead he killed her and left her in a trash bin.

I agree. Sad? A little. But it could have been so much worse.

I was, lol. It is sad that the woman dumped her baby off, but she did not kill the baby and the baby is fine.

You can legally take a baby to a hospital, church or fire station here as well with no questions asked. Still, you will hear of a baby being found in a trash can or dumpster somewhere. It is gut wrenching! I like to hear of the happy ending ones where the baby survives though because there are so many people who would love to adopt a baby and they will get a good home.

every time I hear about a baby being dumped somewhere, I think to myself why cant they just drop it off on a door step and ring the bell and run.

Very sad. But I do feel grateful that the mom left the baby in a safe place, even if she didn't take it inside.

I would much rather listen to stories of babies being abandoned at fire departments or police stations than the alternative.

the mom most likely also thought sitting on top of the transformer would keep the baby warm and thus did that to avoid being seen.

Because in some places you can be prosecuted for that.

People get so upset (understandably) when a baby is killed or left in a dumpster or toilet. Now the mom did the right thing and dropped the baby off at a designated spot instead of killing it or putting it in a dumpster. This is what we wish happens every time there is a story about a baby being killed because the mom didn't know what to do. Why is this a bad thing?

Oh, sorry. I thought she was referring to that post, as it was the one she quoted.

Not nearly as sad as "baby is found dead in dumpster".

MrsKitty, the mother was trying to do the right thing, and I'm very happy about that. However, due to the temperature, the baby very well could have died.

No, you're not the only one. I've actually daydreamed about how I would handle it.

Nope. I was just thinking I'd love to live in the town where they leave a basket outside their door to receive a little one. I'd love to adopt one day. I just don't know if we'll have finances and an opportunity at the same time.

Judy, FWIW, Ohio still has the death penalty. I don't see this father not getting something like that.

Even as a preteen I used to dream of someone leaving a baby on my doorstep. I had heard a story on the news, I guess I was 10 or 11, and that is what I though "Why would people not just drop it at a home? or here"

We plan to adopt 1 or 2 children in the future. I would gladly accept a baby on my doorstep.
