View Full Version : Who has a Nikon DSLR?

I'm strongly considering one. I have been looking that D60, D80, and D90. Other than trying out the 60 and 90 in the store, I have no experience w/ Nikons.

I would be shooting a lot of different things - architecture, children, adults, etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My only advice is never, ever buy a sub-scale imager. At a minimum, the resolution of each and every lens you own will be reduced by 30%. My vote, D-300. I love it.

What is a sub-scale imager? I'm not familiar with that term.

A quick google search tells me that the D300 is over $1,000 and I can't afford that anytime in my near future.

Actually, I found a few w/ different lens combinations for around or slightly under $1,000.

What is a sub-scale imager? I'm not familiar with that term.

The vast majority of DSLR's use a smaller "chip" than ordinary 35mm film. Some exceptions are the Canon 5D and the Nikon D300. The reason they do this is simple. They pay for chip size. The drawback is also equally simple. Image resolution is determined by the product of the lens MTF (in lp/mm) multiplied by the image size (in mm). The smaller the imager, the poorer the image resolution for a given lens. Most manufactures have tried to pull the wool over the consumer's eyes by advertising a large number of pixels as the "resolution" rather than the number of line-pairs that can actually be resolved in an image. Fortunately, their are some consumers who resist this charade and both Canon and now Nikon have been forced to respond with full-scale imagers.

If history is any guide (and it is), the D300 will be under a thousand dollars by next Christmas.

I have a D80. I like it. You can get great deals on them right now since the D90 came out. Personally I'd stay away from the D60 if you want something like the 50mm f/1.8 to autofocus. I had the D40 and sold it after I got my 50mm lens because while it's easy to manually focus some things, NOT so easy for a 10-month-old who won't hold still :)

I have the D40X and love it (for a digital). I still prefer my Nikon N65 35 mm film camera, but no darkroom leaves me stuck with digital. I would get the D60. Too bad you missed my post a month or so ago. Ritz had a sale and the D60 came with a 18-55mm lens for under $500.

I have the D90. I'm still getting used to it.

I have a point and shoot polariod. I so want something with more power. I'm slowly working on my DH. My most recent line was a good one. "Honey, if you want me take pictures of your band and have them turn out really awesome, I should have a better camera"

My line was, "If you want good photos of your motorcycle races, I'm gonna need a better lens." Unfortunately, there are pro photographers at the races who do nothing but motorcycle racing photography. Foiled again.

There are too many choices!!

Hidesome, thank you for that explaination. Not sure I fully understand, but I think I get the gist of it. I'm just not sure that I'd even notice a difference in resloution. And I can almost guarantee my customers wouldn't. I'm still considering it, though, and have a 300D in my cart right now (with lens) for $909.

The other REALLY REALLY nice thing about the 300D is the larger pixels. That may sound like a bad thing, but in reality it gives you much lower noise. A 300D can shoot essentially noise free up to ISO 6400. That's right ISO 6400. That means you can shoot indoors without a flash, you can shoot outdoors without a tripod, or you can shoot race cars without high speed film... You won't regret it. It also has built in white balance."cathug"

My 5yr old insisted on the cat hugging thing.

Are you guys talking about the Canon 300D or the Nikon D300? I'm confused.

I have to confess, I've managed to totally distort the model numbers of Nikon cameras. The version I recommend IS the D700. I'm sorry for having said D300 (which is crap). The D3 is a nice camera, but normal people don't need one and cannot afford one.

Yeah, after researching a big I was thinking about the 700. I'll just have to save up for it, I guess. I had actually ordered a 300, but it was out of stock and turned into a big mess/scam so that order has been cancelled.

You guys race?

What and where? DH used to race too, I did track days with him during his training for years, what a lifestyle huh?

I haven't riden a bike since I get pregnant with J, and he retired shortly thereafter, but he still rides for fun.

I have a D80 but I am totally worthless with it. I use it on full auto more or less like a point and shoot. DH takes better advantage of it's capabilities. He researched the hell out of cameras and that is the one that he selected FWIW.

Dh races dirtbikes - cross crountery and grand prix. Back in his younger days he did some motocross, but not anymore. He races in the intermediate class.

I have a little dirtbike (suzuki 125) but have only ridden a few times. I'm hoping to get on it a lot this summer and really learn how to ride it.

All 3 kids have dirtbikes too. Kayden has a 70, Karson has a 50 and Oscar has a 50 with training wheels. So cute.

Awesome! DH's racing number was 95! How freaking cool. I had a Yamaha TTR125L and a Suzuki SV650 for the track. DH raced street bikes, he raced Yamaha R6s, but now he has an R1 and a BMW cruiser.

We sold the dirtbikes and the race bikes and pit scooters and all that crap when he retired and now he just has the street bikes, but he is really ready to get himself another dirtbike and one for the J. I think I would like another one too.

Lets see if I can find any cool pictures they are old ones though.
