Scary! But if nobody's hurt yet, that's a good start. I hope for a happy ending.

I hope for a happy ending too.
Adding to that: What a bunch of dummies. Lake Erie is a crazy lake. She is the most shallow and I've seen water go from smooth to 5 feet waves within 25 mins. Today is around 50 degrees here.
This is my scenario of what happened:
A bunch of people were out walking on the "shore". They aren't aware of the fact that the ice is solid on top but at the shore, small waves are eating away at the underside. They all are out walking and crack! You never, ever, ever, walk on a shore line filled with ice on any lake. Even with temps of -40 the ice is not in any way safe. There are warnings about this for a reason.

Scary! I hope they're able to rescue them.

I was hoping you'd pop in and give us your take. I simply cannot fathom an ice floe 8 miles in diameter!
Here's an update:

I hate that one person died. :( I'm glad the others were rescued, though.

I feel sorry for the one person that died because in the second article it said that some just sat down and waited. In all honesty though, one out of that many isn't bad. Not to trivialize the death though.

Our street's stair case in the fall:

And the winter:

If you look at the break in the trees by the stair case area in the pic, you'll see the ice along the shore.
As for the guy who said he heard the Lake was frozen completely over...I don't know who told them that, but it has been years since that has happened. The last time I ever remember that happening I was 10. You can go out during the winter when the wind isn't sucking your breath out of your body and listen to the ice creaking and moving. It is beautiful.

Such beautiful pictures! The winter one is absolutely gorgeous, though.
