Hi, I'm Stephanie and lurk a little but haven't had time to post here for quite a few months. Anyway, my issue is my husband, two boys and I are having a family photo taken on Saturday. We cannot decide what to wear. Is it better to have all of us wear the same colors (light blue and khakis) or mix it up a little (2 wear light blue and 2 wear navy, all with khakis)? I haven't been able to find much I like, and now am limited by time and few places around here to shop. Thanks, any input is greatly appreciated!

I'd mix it up.

I'd keep the bottoms all the same color and the tops the same color but different shades.

Mix it up some - my family is going to be wearing green and navy blue - we are even mixing stripes with small dots on DD's dress and then solid for DH.
Think like this:

As far as mixing I mean. Hope this helps!

I think it's really just personal preference.

If it's an outdoor shoot, I like to see colors that contrast w/ the background. So, if you have a greenery background, maybe do some yellows or oranges something that'll pop against the green. If you have a white background, avoid white. And if it's a dark background, avoid dark colors.

I am not a fan of matchy matchy, but that's just my personal preference, not a photographer thing.

My favorite is same color scheme, different prints.

Personally I have people wear natural-looking clothing rather than school uniforms. I would definitely avoid bright white or very dark clothing and certainly avoid the combination. In general portraits are emphasizing skin tones which can be difficult to photograph in high contrast backgrounds/environments. In short, the way brides and grooms dress is the worst possible combination!

One of my favorite family photos is the one where we're all wearing earthtones - browns, khakis, and olive greens. And it's a cheap studio portrait!

Personally... I would have everyone wear whatever outfit suits their personality and shows off their style!

Thanks for all the input! We are mixing it up some, and all wearing various shades of blue with khakis. DH's tie and DS1 striped shirt have several shades of blue and I think it all pulls it together nicely. I think what complicated matters is that between winter and not exercising, and DS2 completely weaning in November and not burning extra calories for me, I've gained a little extra weight and am not real happy with how things fit me at the moment. Now if we can make it until tomorrow morning without anyone getting sick, we will be good to go.

I'm a big fan of having a child on my lap to hide my fatty'ness.
