Oh, I am bad about that. I also use "anyway" a lot. I blame "so' on DH's family, though. If you talk to any of them, they start most of their conversations with "so'.

The thread was inspired by an email I got from my dd. I am not paying 50K a year for her to attend a private Tier 1 University just to get emails filled with incorrect and grossly annoying grammar. I am just wondering when (not to mention why) this became acceptable?

It needs to, like, stop. Like, yesterday. ;)

No problem whatsoever.

I think the thread you are referring to was about children as young as 6 y/o participating on a message board. When I commented on it, I was thinking of young children, but I don't usually bother to expand my replies to specific details.

Besides, except for the fact that my children never disobey me, I'd have a pretty hard time keeping kids who don't live in my house off the internet. :roflol

"Anyway" is a perfectly good adverb to use at the beginning of a sentence for transitioning. "So" shouldn't be used at the beginning of a sentence unless it's "so that" or being used like in this sentence, but now that I know it bothers Icon, I'll have to try to make sure I use it. :p

Kerry, I'm okay with having low-brow humor. I'm also okay with being "predictable." :p

I'm prolly never gonna stop using prolly. I'm not irritated by those sorts of things. *shrug* I'm quite capable with regards to English, whether speaking, reading or writing. I've always excelled at it, even enjoy the technical stuff. But this ain't English class.

I do find it a bit humorous when someone complains about another's grammar/typing skills, only to make plenty of errors of their own.

That usually amuses me too.

Generally speaking I don't point out specific individuals' spelling errors. My exception to that is in a thread wherein the specific individual is griping about spelling/grammar.

Text speak normally bugs the shit out of me, even in actual texts. But I know a 56 yr old man who uses it and for some reason when he does it, it's endearing. I think because he's the last person you'd expect it from. ROFL

Icono, you have kids that live outside the home? Wow! I thought your comment about none of them using the internet was a bit extreme.

Yes, several. I have kid(s) in college across the country, kid(s) in highschool (away from home), kid(s) in an exchange program out of the country and kids still at home. I think sometimes you (collective) do not realize how much older my dh and I are than most of you, lol.

I have never once made a comment about someone's grammar/spelling on this board. I understand well that we all have widely different educational backgrounds, that English is not the 1st language for every member, and that some of us are just poor typists. That is not what I intended this to be. :(

I don't see that people's complaints about "prolly" are in any way making fun of someone's grammar or typos. Since it is an intentional butchering of the English language, I honestly don't know why you're sensitive about it. It's not as though you really are unintelligent, yet people are picking on you about it. I’m not trying to be bitchy; I just truly don’t get it.

I'm not Tata, obviously but I remember people on her for using "prolly" while also flaming her pretty hard core. I've assumed that's why she feels sensitive about it. There was quite a lot of drama that was born from the world "prolly", really. Just thinking back to it now sort of gets my hackles up a bit again. I'll leave it at,though. I'll say that when people bring it up now (not you,Judy) I sometimes waitr for the other shoe to drop.

Text speak doesn't bother me. "Hafta", "shoulda", "prolly" doesn't bother me. The only things that I always feel compelled to want to correct are things like the "loose "and "lose" and "rediculous" when it's typed a lot in one post or something.

I kind of look at some of these things like swear words: yeah, there is likely a more intelligent way of putting it, but sometimes it's fun to say or type. While Judy doesn't understand the sensitivity, I can't say that I understand the annoyance . I would maybe if it was something other than a message board.

Fair enough.

I think part of it is that I don't much understand the nitpicky-ness of those kinds of complaints. Mostly, I suppose I feel sensitive about it because I feel that the people who complain about my use of it know that I use it. I realize that's my problem and no one else's.

JudyJudyJudy
03-04-2009, 04:25 PM

Most typos or errors don't bother me. I don't sit here with red pen on my screen or anything. I rather enjoy colloquialisms and idioms, and text speak is really funny sometimes.

I personally think intentional misspellings (prolly, hafta, etc) are more "mockworthy" than unintentional misspellings. I can understand simply not knowing how to spell something, but to know how to spell something and then intentionally butcher it, that I don't really understand.
