Man, oh man. I hope they are handing out nicotine patches.

Poor guards! Or some nicotine gum at the very least!

My brother is in prison in Ohio. I know it would cost money but I wish they had done something to help the inmates quit smoking or using chew.

How will they enforce that when they can't even stop people from smuggling in and doing hard street drugs in prison?
I remember when dh quit smoking a couple years after we moved in together. He quit cold turkey and he was so hard to be around for about 6 weeks that I was literally ready to split up and have him move out. I'm glad he quit though.
I foresee lots of fighting and violence if then can enforce this.

It doesn't sound like it was handled well. I wonder if they were given advance notice and had offers to help them break the addiction.
State officials said the ban will help deal with costs involving long-term health care for inmates who smoke.
What about the inmates or workers who don't smoke but were having to suck it up second-hand?

Federal prisons went smoke-free( tobacco free, actually) a few years ago. Inmates had a year notice in advance. To DH' knowledge, there wasn't any rioting. Some grumpy inmates, but they got over it.

This is going to come across as sexist, but... I wonder how the women prisons are handling this. Women usually cycle together if they are close to each other, so a bunch of women on their periods, frustration (from the environment), and no cigs? Oy.

Funny... I know a guy who used to volunteer at my work. He broke into a gas station down the road and stole over $2500 of cig cartons. He was caught because... well, he drove an El Camino.
He was sentenced to 4 years. He was a two pack a day smoker.
He he.
El Camino.

Kansas prisons have been smoke free for years, and it's a huge smuggling business for them. It won't stop the inmates from smoking, they just get more creative. And no, they don't give them any gum or patches to help.

When some of our schools in Georgia went smoke-free (they went smoke-free before the entire state did), we had teachers sneaking around to smoke. I hated that the broiler room, a favorite smoking place, was right beside my classroom, and I hated that one teacher thought it was a good idea to shit and smoke at the same time. I ended up having to use the students' restroom.
