Ten Children Hospitalized After Drinking Cleaning Fluid
posted 12:10 pm Fri March 13, 2009 - Little Rock, AR
from Channel 7 - http://www.katv.com/news/stories/0309/603408.html
Hospital officials say 10 children drank windshield wiper fluid after a staffer at a Scott daycare mistakenly put the liquid in a refrigerator and served it.
Doctors estimate the children, ages 2 to 7, drank about an ounce of the blue fluid late Thursday afternoon before realizing it tasted wrong. Only one child remained hospitalized this morning, after blood samples showed "measurable levels" of methanol, a highly toxic alcohol that can induce comas and cause blindness.
Julie Munsell, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Human Services, identified the daycare as being run out of the home of Carolyn Bynum in Scott.
Munsell says Bynum voluntarily relinquished her daycare license on Friday, permanently closing the facility.
Bynum declined to comment about the incident.

How do you accidentally put windshield wiper fluid in the refrigerator?! It should have been labeled and if she wasn't sure what it was she should have smelled it before she served it!!! Those poor kids and their poor parents :( If it were my child I would definitely sue them because who knows how it will affect their future health.

You know this is my question also. It just shocks me that someone could make a mistake like that. I mean washer fluid comes in a different container that looks nothing like juice and koolaid is normally put in a pitcher. I just can't figure out how she made that mistake.

There are so many things wrong with this situation. I would be loath to leave my kiddo at a daycare that would serve my 2-5 yo Kool-aid or anything that has a color that would resemble window washer fluid anyway. Also, it is my understanding that bottles must be labeled. My dd's daycare labels everything very clearly. Even so, I will probably print the article out and share it with my daycare provider. The owner is really good about having staff meetings and sharing information and reviewing safety procedures.

To add to that, how could you not smell it? Cleaners like that generally have a pretty strong chemical smell.
I feel so bad for the kids.

When I was younger I read an article about a young mom who put anifreeze in her baby's bottle "by accident" thinking it was formula and the baby died. Antifreeze looks nothing like formula at all. I don't really remember all the details but I do remember that much.
OMG. I can't even imagine how I'd react if something like that was done - accident or not (which I find it hard to believe it was) - to my child. I realize that day care is the best and sometimes the only option for some parents, but I am so glad I don't have to send my kids there.

You know what? I am a home daycare provider and I feel the same way you do. Thats why I try to make my home feel as much like home as the child's home.
My ds1 was in daycare until he was 15 months old and it was SOO hard leaving him everyday. The unknowns always got to me. I have a lot of respect for mom's that have to work and put their kids in daycare. Its always a risk because sometimes no matter how nice a person is you just never know.
People like that woman make me sick to my stomach no child deserves that. I'll say it again...there is NO WAY that was an accident.

I can't see how that was an accident. Windex type stuff has such a strong odor..how could one get it confused with kool aid?

I really can't fathom how that could have been an accident. Or how so many kids managed to actually drink it. It sounds very fishy. I can't even get past how you manage to put car winshield washing liquid in your fridge to begin with. When I buy it it comes in this big thing, and is really obviously not a drink. Not to mention the fact that I keep it in the garage.

Illiteracy? Poor sense of smell? Plus, Kool-aid is totally NASTY and has always smelled bad to me.
I am totally NOT defending or making excuses here; just trying to figure it out myself.

How do you accidentally put windshield wiper fluid in the refrigerator?!
That was my first question. My second was how would you think it was Kool-Aid. If this was indeed an accident, the woman has no business ever keeping another kid again, and I feel bad for her. It it wasn't an accident,...

Public school lunches, often paid with tax dollars, aren't much better, if any.
