DA: Anna Nicole Smith's boyfriend was 'enabler'

LOS ANGELES – Anna Nicole Smith's lawyer-turned-boyfriend was the principal enabler in a conspiracy with two doctors to provide the "known addict" thousands of prescription pills in the months before she died of an overdose, California Attorney General Jerry Brown said Friday.

Howard K. Stern and Drs. Khristine Eroshevich and Sandeep Kapoor were charged by Los Angeles County prosecutors after a two-year probe by the attorney general, state medical and insurance officials and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

"What we have in this case is a conspiracy among three individuals," Brown told a news conference. "Howard K Stern is the principal enabler, and Dr. Erosevich and Dr. Kapoor are prescribing drugs excessively to a known addict and using false and fictitious names, all in violation of the law and all in furtherance of a conspiracy."

In addition to conspiracy, the charges filed Thursday include unlawfully prescribing a controlled substance and prescribing, administering or dispensing a controlled substance to an addict. Stern faces six felony counts and the doctors face seven each. Each count carries a potential sentence of three years, Brown said.

Despicable. I wonder how much they had to do with her son's death. I'm betting these docs were involved in other patients getting drugs illegally as well.

Why did it take 2 years to figure this out? Weren't people talking about this years ago, while she still had her show? It's a shame nobody checked into before she and her son died.

I also wonder how they all managed to do it for so long without getting caught. Why would a sane individual do that? Why weren't they trying to get her clean?

It sickens me that a little girl has to be with out her momma because they didn't want to do anything about her addiction other than feed it. :(

Ugh. So, what was he doing? Getting them and then giving them to her? I don't quite understand.

Or was it that he would go and try to convince them that they should give her more stuff? If he was picking up the scripts and then handing them over, well, it seems he should know she was on a shit load of stuff, but would he know about potential reactions and stuff? I'm just confused as to what exactly his role was.

If he weren't so scummy, I could see that Stern thought he was "helping" her, but I can't understand doctors doing this.

I've posted before that I have a sister who is addicted to legal prescription drugs (at least most of them are legal). I truly don't know how she gets prescribed all that she is prescribed. I suspect more than one doctor is prescribing them, though I know that one of her doctors got busted in the past for both prescribing too many drugs and taking them himself. I can't help but wonder if the pharmacist is in some way guilty of doing something wrong since she gets all the prescriptions filled at the same pharmacy.

I think Stern was the one convincing the doctors to do it. He must have been paying them handsomely to do it since they were even writing some of the prescriptions using fake names.

Judy, that makes sense now.

That is like my one friend that gets multiple narc meds from ONE doctor. Something very, very not right about that.
