My son Samuel is 6 days old. He's happy to come to the breast to eat, there is only one problem. He won't keep his tongue down! He keeps moving his tongue to top of his mouth so that he ends up biting my nipple, which of course hurts me and frustrates me. I have large breasts and I'm feeding with a nipple shield. I am working with a wonderful LC but even she is out of suggestions as to how to get him to keep his tongue down. Because of his bad latch he's unable to pull down my hind milk and I I'm not getting a let down of the hind milk with my pump either. I am afraid I am going to lose my supply before we can correct his latch. It's a two fold problem and feeding time is becoming the most dreaded time of day for me. I am desperate to make this work I hope someone can help me.

Hi,

this is a problem I could help if I could touch your baby and help him relax. He has tension that is keeping his tongue up instead of down. Having him suck on your finger pad side up might help him. Let him suck before you put him on the breast. Where do you live? On my web site under breastfeeding, I have an article about using bottle feeding to help breastfeeding. As he gets older, things will settle down and he will probably nurse better. Can your lactation consultant help you get set up with finger feeding? That helps the baby get the sucking better. You could call me tomorrow afternoon and we could problem solve. www.mybreastfeeding.com 510-881-5348-
