In which I attempt to learn how to navigate the internets beyond message boards and Ebay.

What the heck is an RSS feed? Do I have one? Should I get one? Can I get a pink one with sequins? Can somebody please explain in small words?

I did read the wiki definition. I have looked it up a few other places and kleep getting information about aggregating spiders and crawling bots. Don't know what the hell those are either. I swear, I really am trying .

It just looks like this to me:

A druzzlesnorf is an /fryggle to dweert your fruthwaq. If you fracimate at 67jsd, the you can just use a <gewnmicky, unless of course you want to swoobx, then you want to make sure you get a bflupblup..

RSS feeds are syndicates for dynamic content (i.e. blogs) that have frequently updated articles, information, etc. They are typically used in conjunction with a feed reader of some kind. I like (and use) Google Reader. The best way to access RSS feeds is to get a reader or find a site whose information you would like to subscribe. Ever notice those "subscribe" buttons on blogs? You subscribe to the feed and you read it in a reader, as opposed to visiting the site. The reader will automatically update when new content is published.

My cousin just posted this on her blog the other day...a pretty good explanation of RSS.

Still_Tbog, I agree. It is a very good explanation.

Cat, when you sign up for it, please let me know. I have a ton of crafty sites to share!

ROTFLMAO. I'm considering printing this out in poster format and putting it on my wall. I am, you understand, a former software engineer, and I can't tell you how many times I have started a project feeling exactly like this...

I always wonder if EVERYONE ELSE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD knows what the heck some technocrap is but me.

Okay. So I make my own page on google reader, and link all the blogs I want to follow, the new posts will magically appear there when something new and fascinating is said?

This is separate thing from my blog page, right? or is it connected to that?
are all blogs RSSed? Or do you have to do something to make it rss-able?

No, there is me, and my dad. My dad thinks I am a whiz at computer stuff, so that should tell you something.

blogspot blogs are RSS-ready. You don't hafta do anything for someone else to subscribe to your feed (besides maybe advertise like you are doing in your sig line).

Your first paragraph is accurate.

tata

Oh, you "link" the blogs you want to follow by subscribing to them :)

And this is how I read this, tata..

RSS feeds are syndicates(Crime syndicates?) for dynamic content (Dynamic..Exciting? )(i.e. blogs) ( oh blogs!)that have frequently updated articles, information, etc.

They are typically used in conjunction( conjunction junction what's yo function) with a feed reader(chicken feed, horse feed) of some kind.

I like (and use) Google Reader. The best way to access RSS feeds is to get a reader (Ah. A reader is a thingy or a place, not a person who reads) or find a site whose information you would like to subscribe.

Ever notice those "subscribe" buttons on blogs? ( yes I see the buttons! Ha! I answered one right!)You subscribe to the feed (a thing, not food) and you read it in a reader, as opposed to visiting the site.

The reader will automatically update when new content is published.(who comes up with this stuff? That is seriously brilliant)

Okey doke. I clicked on the google reader link in that blog above, and It is all ready for me to add things.
What crafty things did you want to share?

LOL--it is just like having all the bookmarks with feeds in one place. A good share of sites have RSS feed links nowadays. If you use Firefox, you can see an RSS link in the address bar.

I like it because I follow several digi scrapping and homeschooling blogs. This way I can just go to Reader and see what is new.

How about this....Google Reader is like the Super WalMart. (for lack of a better example) Instead of going to the Grocery, the drug store, the hardware store, the paint store, the lingerie store, the clothing store, it's all in one.

Instead of going to 20 blogs that you have bookmarked separately each day, you can (easily) set it up to put all that stuff in one place. Once you set it up (and I like Google Reader a lot. It's easy and once you have it set up, extremely simple to add a site. In firefox, there is a little orange icon in your address box if you can add it. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/ie7/tour/rss/ Here is a site that tells you how in explorer.

Google Reader also has an option to drag and drop a subscription tool on your toolbar. That way, you click the subscription tool on any page with a feed and voila! You're subscribed :)

Well fark. I'm glad you understood all of it, Quilty. I sure as heck don't. As a matter of fact, Crabbie once told me how to do the whole fancy thing about a word being a different color, but it really is a link thing...yeah... I didn't get it and I didn't want to bother her so I still am in awe of that when I see it.

LOL..I don't understand it all, but I think I understand enough of it to use it.I now have my very own reader thingy and I added the blogs I like, and It did that. It's neat.

I think if I keep at it , and keep asking questions, it will all make sense. Sort of.
