View Full Version : How does your nursling ask to nurse?
GirlsMama

My littlest girl is 23 months old, when she wants to nurse she pants twice, like a dog, then says "Ruff!" like a dog. Then I say, "Are you a little dog who drinks milk?" and she says "Ruff!" and nods, then I nurse her.
Sooo, how does your extended nursling ask for milk?

Not the best habit but my 17 mo yanks at my shirt. He also makes the sign for milk. I have not taken the time to modify the shirt yanking behavior so that is my own fault. And it is not that bad.

My son (16 months) will sign for milk or if he's being impatient, just stick his hand down my shirt & try to help himself! We really try to make him sign for it though bc otherwise he'll stick his hand in my shirt ALL the time & at the most inopportune moments.

My 29 month old says "Mommy I want my milky" sometimes if I'm busy and I say no she says "I want milky NOW!" and to switch breasts she says "mommy I want the other milky" Sometimes she calls them booboos.
It's kind of cute, but she cries if I say I am busy cooking dinner, etc.

My son tries to stick his hand down my shirt or will grunt at me. Out of habbit I had just done it now I am relizing that he gets it and make him say "nundo" the word we use for breast. It is swhilli for breast or something when my son was young I told my husband I didnt want are son to yell out "boob!" if he wanted to nurse so I asked him to teach me some words that would subsitute boob. So now my son says "nundo" and we are working on him signing or saying please. It works as long as he isnt tired

Anne will either cry, say "baba mama", or dig her hands in the front of my shirt. She has reserved signing for milk only WHILE nursing (not very helpful, huh? "lol9"). We are working on this.

He just says, "I need to nurse". I think it's funny that he says NEED, and says it as if it's a pressing issue and I have to hurry!

Ezra is 27 months old and he says, "Nurse now". Of course, the way he says it is very dependant on his current mood. Sometimes he fusses/cries before and after saying it, sometimes he just sort of looks at me all polite and pleeding and says it like a question: "Nurse now?" The one I don't like is when he stomps up to me and yells, "Nurse NOW!" If he does that, I usually say, "Do you know how to ask nicely?" and then he'll say "Nicely?" (as if that's what I asked him to say). lol I think I need to say something else to him, since he clearly doesn't really undersant what I mean.

Lol. All so cute! I have always loved nursing to the point when the nursling is old enough to express her happiness when it comes to nursing!

Mason says Mommy Tee-Tee and runs to the couch and flops down with a big smile. He really only nurses at his nap time or early in the morning. He will also climb up on me if I am sitting and it is not his normal nursing time, patt me on my breasts and say "My Tee-Tee?" The look on his face is just the cutest!

DS says, "Milk, mamma". A few months ago it was just, "mi, mi" while he made the sign.

My baby(ds) who will be 3 this month only nurses in the am. He wakes up and starts reaching down my shirt, smiles at me, and says "I want some boobah." He's always called it that.

He grunts and grabs at my shirt, sometimes reaching down my shirt, actually. He's 12 months old.
He's done the sign for "milk", but he hasn't quite figured out how to use it to ask for nursing time.

My baby who turned one yesterday will either try to get in my shirt as soon as I offer... he lately barely comes to nurse unless he is tired. He's busy being a toddling toddler, lol. That or laughs and giggles hysterically when I flash him my boobies. Then he'll drop whatever he is doing and walks over.

when mine were able to 'ask' it would vary from saying somethign like mama boo
when older at home would ask sometimes sitting next to me, would help them selves
tho if my nipples were erect, they woudl think it was feeding time
flashing boobs was then feeding time no matter what they were doing at the time

Both the DDs just say "Duddhu" (Urdu / Hindi word for milk or milkies). If nobody is around (except my co-wife and other children) and I am not busy in work, they just take out the breast and help themselves. If others are around, they whisper the word and wait for an assurance.

My baby who will be 10 months on the 15th pulls the top of my nursing tank out and then looks down at my boobs. When we're in public and I have on a regular top she'll bury her head in my chest. Call me crazy, but I find her method of asking adorable!

My Sadie Sue is 19 mos & says "Baba's...Baba's?" while tugging at my shirt from the neck, pulling it down (oops!). I, too, find their little methods of 'asking' absolutely adorable!

My 11 month old son takes my hand and taps it against my chest- in other words he wants me to take my breast out for him! If that doesnt get instant results- he whines. We are getting to a stage where he's getting agressive when he wants his "che-che's"!

Before my nursling (23 months old) could talk he would sign "milk" but since he started talking he says "nur" and when he's ready for the other side he says "nur udder side".
Sometimes he says "mommy's milk".

My husband is Mexican, so he always calls my breasts "chi-chis". This developed into asking Riley "do you want chi-chi?". Now that she is speaking better, she walks up to me, points, and says "day-day?"
She even brings her baby doll up to me and throws a fit until I nurse her baby too!

My almost 26 month old will do one of two things...
She will ask me to hold her and then try to nurse through my shirt and say "pease" over and over again until I let her.
OR
She will say "I want dink of boobie".

Lana opened and closed her hand for the sign for milk. It's funny because she would wake up sometimes without opening her eyes and do it. LOL... I just recently weaned her at 14 months.

I have been on this sight for 3 years, but I have only posted a few times. My dd will be 3 this month and she says mama I need boob! I have been working to wean her slowly, but reading this and seeing the great support makes me want to continue nursing her. I am so torn. There is nothing like nursing a toddler and the bond you have. I think it is the sweetest thing and it is so rewarding because they really start to understand how special nursing is and how it comforts them. Thanks for listening to me ramble on.

Camillesmommy - i would do what you feel is right. You will always find people who are negative about it, in the same way you'll find support. It's Maya's 2nd birthday today, and we're still going strong. Congrats for getting that far!

I commend all of you for sticking to it for so long. I'm sure that it is mostly because nursing is such a rewarding experience for both the baby and the mother. My dd is only 4 mos. now, but I would love to make it to the point where she can ask to nurse, and I could care less what someone else thinks about it. :)
Keep going strong, ladies!

My 2 1/2 year old used to flick his lips with his hands and say "Buuuu" Now he has progressed verbally enough that he just asks for boobie. He will pull up my shirt and smell my boob saying "mmm that's good." and he'll offer for my DH to smell it too. Or he will just grin at me and pat my chest.

Once you and your baby have mastered it, you'll be so glad that you persevered. The great thing is that you always have milk at the right temperature on tap. No need to sterilise, no need to heat up and no need to make up. When your baby asks for the milk you can give it without the wait!

My 22-month old now says "Mama Pees nuss" (Mama, please nurse)- I made him start asking like this a few months ago because he was starting to just come up and try to pull down my shirt. It took him a few tries, but now he always "asks nice." When I respond and say "Ohhh! You want to nurse?" he always gets a big grin on his face like "She got it!!"
When he was about 12-18 months, he used to sign for it.
