Having Trouble Pumping

Hi,

My son is 7 weeks old and I recently started back to work. In the beginging I was able to let down and pump very easily - like 6oz at a time. I recently just got my period :( and all of the sudden I just cant seem to get more than 2 oz. So now I am quite paranoid that I will never be able to keep this up is it because I have my period or because I am stressed or anyone have any suggestions?

Did you start birth control?

It is very typical for your supply to dip during your period. Try a cal-mag supplement. I've heard that is suppose to help. I also have noticed a dip in my supply when my period rolls around. However, it usually goes back to normal once my period is over.

I did start the mini pill, and I did some reading last night and some people I guess have had dips in supply. I will keep on it and if it continues, I think I might have to stop the pill.

The minipill made my supply dip with ds when he was very young. I stoppd and started it again when he was around 10 months and I didn't have any issues with supply then.

Hello my name's frances and I am a Medela Mom Maven. Medela encourages the Mom Mavens to share our experiences so I thought I would share a little bit with you.

I went through a similar deal when I had the mirena inserted. I ended up bleeding for three weeks straight and my milk supply hit an all time low. But I was also having previous problems after I had my son with the breastfeeding but I kept on trying and kept on going.

I talked with a lactation consultant and they had told me even though it can be a hassle to pump every two hours when it came time for the bleeding and it will definitely help with the pumping issue. It actually helped me get a pretty good amount. But in the end it was a pretty good deal.
