Hi Sheri,
We came home from the hospital last week with our newborn daughter and have been successful breast feeding thanks to your help. I've noticed the past three nights that around 6pm she will feed for an extra long period of time. Is this normal and is it possible to overfeed? All other feedings of the day are normal length.

Hi Kristin,
I am so glad you guys are doing well!
It is common for babies to cluster feed or "marathon" feed at that time of the day.
Two reasons. One, it is when your milk supply is typically lowest for the day. Two, it is there usual fussy time and nursing is soothing to the baby.
You really won't overfeed her, when she is full she will just suck without swallowing.
Don't worry. You are doing great - I am so proud of you!

Regarding engorgement ~ How should my breasts feel after the initial engorgement? At first my left breast got very engorged and has since gone down and feels so much lighter. The right was very engorged yesterday but today has gone down. Should my breasts be engorged just before each feeding? Thank you, Shari.

The goal is to get rid of the engorgement as fast as possible. Less pain, easier latch and more hidmilk. If you feed regularly, you should not feel engorged like you did last week. you may feel fuller before the feeding - that is ok.
