A few days ago I got to thinking about my friend, who was due with her second child on the 22nd, and I decided to hurry and make her a blanket for the baby. She wanted to attempt a vbac (and had found a dr willing to try---unheard of in this country), but 4 days ago, the dr called and said he would not allow her to do it and would not allow any other dr at the hospital to help her. He said that she MUST have a c-section early because she was too small for her overly large baby (estimated at 3.3kilos). She begged him to let her go into labor on her own and try. He said she could, but no matter what time she went to the hospital, he would still section her.

So she went in. Her dh was not allowed to be with her at all. She was knocked out completely for the c-section and not allowed to move for 24 hours. She didn't see the baby for 48hrs and wasn't allowed to breastfeed for 3 days. She wasn't given water for 24 hrs and no food for 48hrs (they said it would cause gas). They usually keep them in the hospital for 10days, but she's hoping to be out at a week. They won't let her go without a bowel movement, but with so little food, that will be difficult.

The baby was left naked on a plastic mattress in a basinet until diapers, sheets, clothes, and a blanket could be provided---which they wouldn't let the mother give until she was allowed to see the baby (48hrs). It blows my mind!!!

Anyway, the blanket----I wanted to do a pink one with white hearts, but I ran out of pink. I went to the stores but nothing matched. I improvised and this is what I came up with (the hat and booties were made by a friend):

On to other stuff...

We had our garden area plowed by horse and plow. They followed it up by using another pull-behind tool (pictured here). If anyone knows the name of this tool, I would love to know what it is.

Let's see if this video comes through (it was taken on my cell phone, so I can't guarentee good quality)

And my final news (for now) is that my latest article was accepted by an editor and passed on to a discussion panel of editors. I should get a reply either way within a week. Crossing my fingers!

Please add your random thoughts and/or pictures. I'll take a few of my flowering fruit trees and come back to post them here. Maybe I'll take one of my doggy too.

I hope someone knows the name of that tool. The man put a heavy rock on it and pulled it along behind the horse. The was used to break up the big clumps left behind by the initial plow.

Cute blanket, That's sad how mom & baby were treated, though.

Cool pics you shared.

Good luck with your article.

That is so sad for your friend and her baby. When I lived in Italy, we heard all the horror stories of how moms were treated in maternity wards, I was terrified that I would go into early labor with dd1 and they would send me to a local hosptial. The army hosptial was awful, but sounded much better than the Italian option! That was 18+ years ago, perhaps things have changed since then.

I should add that they treated the babies better, from what I was told.

Oh and the blanket is adorable! What are you going to do with your cherries? Jam and pie perhaps? YUM!

Mom and baby are doing much better now---they finally let the Dad in to see them. It's sad, sad, sad.

I'll have to look up harrow. Here, they call it a "rake".

With the cherries, I'm planning pies and jam. I may do jelly, but I prefer jam!

I looked up harrow and I'm pretty sure that's what it is. I live in an area where horse drawn plows and harrows are fairly common, but are slowly being replaced. I'm a little sad about that.
