View Full Version : My Deep Dark Quilting Embarrassment

This is the thread for mocking and ridicule, it really is.
I started this fine mess about 10 years ago or so, and made just about every mistake there is to make, and maybe a few more. I used a stack of feedsacks that were given to me by my great grandmother, who heard that I liked to sew and thought I could make something pretty with them. Oy.
I picked a complicated triangle piecing pattern for my very first venture into making a bedsized quilt, and this is how far I went before I stopped and realized I shouldn't go any further:

It's so bad I had to add labels explaining the badness

I bet you have enough sections that line up fairly well to make a crib size quilt and a couple of pillow covers. maybe even twin size with a big border around it and pillow cover.

Awards/charges I would win if this quilt were submitted for competition:
*Most Criminal Misuse of Antique fabrics
*Highest Number of Different Seam Allowances
* Most Blatant Disregard of an Iron
*"Bless your heart award" for having enough sense to stop before I finished it
and my prize would be..
*25 pack of Seam Rippers sponsored by Hancock Fabrics.

The white fabric is a really flimsy see through fabric, and it will probably deteriorate. I'll have to just take it all apart and use a better quality muslin .

You do not suck.. I have seen your quilts and they have been lovely.

Trust me, it is bad. I had no idea what I was doing. It was a ..really good learning experience, yeah, we'll call it that.
At least point and laugh a little.

The first thing I am buying when we get some money is a better sewing machine. I bought the cheapest model at Sears and I swear I spend more time messing with the machine and fixing things the stupid thing does then actually sewing.

Quilty, you should renounce your name, really. I mean, look at that awful quilting. You should change your name to Mistake-y.
I kid, I kid.
Seriously, though, if this is a thread for ridiculing quilts, I have a great one for you to ridicule. :D One that I made several years back.

You don't master any skill without collecting an extensive repertoire of mistakes.
I learned this art of humility in the classical singing program. When I started, I thought I had a nice voice. I auditioned, the professors welcomed me in.
Then I had the first repertoire class, and I realized how truly outclassed I was.
Five years later, I was much better. And I was VERY VERY kind to every incoming freshman. Because I'll never forget the agony of watching every replay of my performance every week on video.
I had to take a class in writing counterpoint- music like Bach wrote. You know, some of the most beautiful music ever? I went into that class expecting it to be the end of my musical career; I don't write music, much less beautiful multiply voiced counterpoint.
Guess what! You can learn how to do that stuff. Amazing!
Now I am eagerly making mistakes in all kinds of fields. I'm thinking about taking a welding class next semester. I can make mistakes in metal. They'll last a really long time.
Good thing I have a good attitude, eh?

You know how people say "I can't sew buttons". Yeah well, I really can't. I tried to replace the button on my peacoat and sewed the pocket closed. No lie.

I am impressed. That takes some serious skill.
Also, I think it looks good. You can tell that my quilting expertise is .. not that expertisey.

Well, it looks better than any of my quilts. Even armed with a straight edge, a cutting mat and a rotary cutter, none of my blocks ever ever end up the same size, much less the desired shape.
You picked good colors...

Yeah. I got mad skillz.
I had to sew a stuffed bear in 7th grade home ec. You should see the thing. He's deformed. His ears look like they are stapled to his head, one arm is shorter than the other, he can't sit up. It's classic.
This thread is hilarious!
First, Cat goes showing us that awful quilt. She is so beyond fabulous now that it's hard to imagine her having made that. It looks like something I could do!
Then Meredith says "Mistake-y" followed by MrsK saying "expertisey." I love it! And paw came right along with the greatest thing I think I've ever read here about buttons and pockets!
I love this thread!

I have a pretty good sewing machine and this happens to me all the time, too. Really sucks the fun outta sewing.

Don't tell me that tata, I have a vision of one day just sitting down and sewing with no machine issues. In a perfect world....
Sorry Hamm. I do think a lot of it is frequent vs. infrequent use and regular maintenance. My mom has a fucking awesome (over $1000) machine that she uses very infrequently so it's a problem she faces most every time she wants to use it.

Well I keep mine cleaned and oiled and maintained so my issue is with a cheap machine. Or maybe it is the nut behind it :P

You really should finish it and submit it!!! Or submit w/out finishing. If you finish it, though, I would put some type of border on it to add to the fug that is already there. "lol9"

It is off, but really I love it. I love the story behind it and I love the colors. To me, a quilt isn't just a blanket, but a story. I love each one that my MIL has made for us or gives to us. Each one has a holiday or a story attached to it. The Amish also make sure there is a mess up on each one of their quilts because nothing is perfect.
Ah yes, Hamm. Operator malfunction. "lol9" ;)

I was thinking an astroturf border would set it all off nicely. I better pick up some heavy duty needles.

I think you should finish it without fixing the boo-boos and call it "Beginnings", or something like that.

And, just to make you feel better, here's a quilt I made for my brother when he was 6 or 7. He picked out all the fabrics, so it's partially his doing. LOL.
There's very little rhyme or reason to it.
