guess it helps when youve seen the movie and you can see the characters and how they act and sound. helps to like the movie enough to read the books.

im sure thers prolly been a thread about twilight at some point. i didnt go searching.

DS has read the first book and stopped part way through the second, he said it got to "whiney." SIL pointed out that the series improved again if you could make it through the second book. We sat down to watch it last night and less than 10 minutes into the movie DS said the book was better. 20 minutes in and I was snoring on the couch.

Well, I love the Twilight Saga, read the entire series in one week. I read the books before seeing the movie and all I can say is that I was pleasently disappointed with the movie. The movie does no justice to the books and watching it actually took away from the books for me. So, I'm very reluctant to even see the second movie they're making. Though, they do have a new director, so maybe that will help.

Keep reading the series. And when you're done with that, I've got some wicked fan-fic that will keep you reading.

Yes, the second book seriously sucks. If you can get through it, the rest of the series is much better.

I read the whole series on my Christmas Break. The fourth one is so worth reading, you can get through 2 and 3. I reread the first and the fourth ones. I cant wait for more movies now.

Not my usual thing to read, but I really enjoyed the series.. even the 2nd book.

The movie seemed "low budget" to me. I'm sure they weren't entirely sure how well it would do. I'm hoping they throw more money at the 2nd movie for special effects - otherwise, it's going to be painful to watch. I think the bar is set pretty high these days for special effects and they're not cheap.

I haven't read the books, but I did watch the movie. Dh is listening to the books on CD.

Jacob read the first book. However, someone told me that at his age, he probably shouldn't read the other books because they get into sex and stuff. What do y'all think? He's 10.

I think there's more sex in a typical movie. The sex in the Twilight books is emotion, tension, sensation generalizations, innuendo & humor. There is no graphic detail - no body parts or acts described - no vulgar language.

Not only that, but the sex is obviously between two who love eachother - and I'd rather kids read about acts of love over acts of violence. So your take on that will affect your comfort level.

The best way to know, though, is to read it yourself.

I'm also glad that she's decided to go ahead with Midnight Sun. I read the almost 300 pages of it that she has provided on her website. It's good and I know I'll buy it when it comes out. :)

I thought the mentions of sex were really really tame. Lots of "I must be near him" " I want to kiss him all the time" but no quivering loins or throbbing members. I thought it was squeaky clean, actually.

But I'd read the last book before he did, and see if you think he could handle that. . (Not for the sex stuff, other stuff)

Thanks, EM and Quilty! I guess I need to read the books myself anyway—to see what all the hype is. ;)

I agree. She was actually criticized for making the characters wait until marriage before sex and having it be so "tame". I have no interest in highly sexualized reading, so I was happy with it.

I HATED the 2nd book. I almost gave up on the whole series because of it.
I loved, loved, loved the 3rd and 4th book. I love Bella and Edward's story and admit it unashamedly lol.

You must absolutely NOT have great literary expectations when you read it, though, or you'll be terribly disappointed. You have to just see it for the love story it is, IMO.

Also, I think part of the fun for me is that it takes place close to where I live and part of the movie was filmed at the falls by my house. It's less than 10 minutes away so I'd pile the kids in the car and go drive through the awesome trees and we'd look at the falls and the Gorge. Of course,I'd be fantasizing the whole time, lol.

I don't think it's appropriate for a 10 year old.

Thanks for the opinions! I'll probably go ahead and read them myself first. To be quite honest, I'm not sure Jacob is really into the books anyway. I think he wanted to read them because of the hype. He might be satisfied that he read one of them.

She is LDS, so that makes sense.

Yeah I was thinking that a 10 year old boy wouldn't really be interested in the books.

The books were written for a Teen/Young Adult audience. I thought the level of sex was on par with the intended audience. She's also LDS and I think that played a part in how it was written.

I would have liked to read some hot sex with Edward, but I'm obviously not the intended audience. LOL!

I was a little disappointed that it actually wasn't filmed here in WA lol, especially when I drove all the way out to Forks! :)

I agree to the bolded. I didn't criticize her. ;) I read a few critics blogs.

I don't think a 10yo boy would have any interest in it. It's not "vampire" action, it's all young adult love angst with a smathering of vampire.

WARNING...a few Twilight spoilers ahead. If you've not finished the series, skip my post.

After I was finished with the Twilight Saga, I came across this fanfic called Wide Awake by Angstgoddess003. It is what's called an all-human-alternate-universe fic. Meaning, there are no vampires and the characters are not canon. In this story, Bella has just moved in with her Aunt Esme and cousin Alice. They live next door to Dr. Cullen and his adopted son's Emmett and Edward. Edward and Bella have dark pasts that leave them severely emotionally scarred, with nightmares that force them to stay awake. They meet and begin to form a bond during the night hours. I know, it sounds so WTF and why should I read this...right? It's rated M for language and smut. But, the writing is phenomonal. The story is not yet finished. It's got 48 chapters. Start reading the first chapter: Gingerbread Zombies. (http://angstgoddess003.livejournal.com/699.html)

Here's a link to Angstgoddess003's livejournal page (http://angstgoddess003.livejournal.com/). The list of chapters for Wide Awake is on the far left (scroll down) of the page. After chapter 43, her "next chapter" button takes you back to her main page instead of chapter 44. So, you have to go back to her main page and actually click chapter 44. Anyhow, if you get that far, I'm sure ya'll can figure it out.

There are also many other genres of Twilight fan-fic. Some that are totally canon, some that are alternate universe but with vampires. A great place to read about these is a forum called http://www.twilighted.net/ You have to register to read the forums and also register to read the posted fics.

I especially like one called The Vampire In The Basement by michellephants. (http://twilighted.net/viewstory.php?sid=3268)

Another fic I'm totally in love with right now is Atlas Shrugged by Jeesiechreesie (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4891389/1/Atlas_Shrugged). This fic takes off just after Bella kisses Jacob in Eclipse. It explores how things might have gone if Edward didn't take it so well. Loving this fic!

Please give Wide Awake a try. So many people love this story that the author is going to publish it sans Twilight names etc. Seriously, read it.

The second book was my favorite! I'm emo about my books though. (and anime)
The movie kind of sucked. They left out so much good stuff and added a bunch of crap that didn't even happen. The sparkly scene had to be some weird inside joke right? He so did not make it a big deal in the book. "This is the skin of a killer Bella". Gag!
The next movie will have a new director (he did Golden Compass). Ireally hope they make it good.

There's no sex until Breaking Dawn. It's not descriptive.

I loved what I read of it too! So much better from Edward's POV.
