I think this is Southern food but I could be wrong. We have a restaraunt here called Memphis Blues BBQ...and its soo tasty (and so bad for you I'm sure)
We are driving an hour out to my mother in laws, and she already had dinner, so we are eating in the car.

Im getting pulled pork on greens, and the fries that are fried in the meaty leftovers..hubby is getting a brisket sandwhich, and we are getting pulled pork nachos. *drool*

I have been craving crazy amounts of m eat lately. I am not a vegetarian, but I definitely eat more tofu and nuts than meat, and lean towards hemp or rice milk over cows milk..the milk I have been craving all pregnancy, but the last few weeks I just can't get enough meat. Salty meat.

So southern, and so stinkin' yummy. I must be really sheltered though, do people not eat pulled pork and greens everywhere?!

Apparently not. I once tried to order gravy with my chicken strips once in California and they had no idea what white gravy was, much less that it was for chicken strips.

Wow. They did not know what gravy was? Please tell me chocolate gravy is served around the country. If not, you have no idea what you are missing out on!

So I thought every decent sized town had a bbq joint, or 3.

We have so many BBQ places here. My favorite place is Bono's. They smoke all of their meet and then they let you choose the BBQ sauce you want.

They have some awesome cheese fries too!

Sputter: white gravy is other wise known as country gravy... and you just can't eat chicken strips w/o it. It is also tasty on french fries, toast, biscuits, mashed potatoes...ok just about everything.

To me, white gravy is the kind that is made with milk and sausage drippings and has crumbled sausage in it, and is served over biscuits.

I'm from Michigan.

Okay. I know sausage gravy. I make my nana's recipe and she was from Mississippi. We just never called it white gravy.

We call it milk gravy and it's made with the drippings from fried chicken or fried pork chops...the best stuff in the world on mashed potatoes or bread!

I am so jealous. I used to work at place called Bubba's Bar-B-Que and they had the best brisket, but some one had a great idea to sell it on e-bay, or something like that so I haven't had it in forever and now I want it!!!
Yum Yum give me some:hugegrin:I love chicken strips with gravy.

Chocolate gravy sounds interesting....
but now this thread has me wanting Texas toast and gravy. (And not the texas toast that is sold in the freezer section, it is just extra thick sliced regular white bread...)

So southern, and so stinkin' yummy. I must be really sheltered though, do people not eat pulled pork and greens everywhere?!

The food was fantastic!

The only time I have ever had pulled pork is at this restaurant, which is a chain, that serves "southern style bbq". They have tons of stuff I had never heard of before like brisket and po'boys? (is that right?) My hubby says its all very Southern United States. Its delicious. When I was having a really stressy day at work I used to go get a beer and a pulled pork sandwhich with fries. Nothing like trans fats to help you deal with difficult customers ;)

Some places like KFC and Swiss Challet serve gravy with chicken, but with like..actually chicken breasts, not with chicken strips as far as I know. I don't think I have seen white gravy before, but my grandma might make it... sounds like something she would do.

As for chocolate gravvy.. uhm.. me some now please?

ETA: An idea of how the restaraunt is here.. it would be kind of like going out for Sushi.. something not from around here, ethnic food. Except that here, Sushi is actually not that "ethnic" it is what everyone eats... theres a Sushi restaurant on every block.. sometimes more. As far as I know, Memphis is the only southern style BBQ place. (Vancouver, B.C.)

Now I want some sweet tea. I'm in California but whenever I visit my family, I ALWAYS have to find sweet tea at a Cracker Barrel.

I love a good pig pickin', never been crazy about greens unless they are beet greens.
White gravy is basically milk gravy, can be anywhere from spicy to regular.

KatieLou

Oh wow! I am so sheltered, can you tell I never get out! YOu know I knew sweet tea, fried chicken, grits, and dumplings, were a southern thing. But some of this other stuff I am a little shocked! Another possible dish from the south. Wilted lettuce salad. Do you eat that? Yum. Sounds gross, but we love it. You guys would have a hay day at my family reunions.

Just for fun a typicial spread at a family reunion would be: fried chicken, greens, pulled bbq, mashed taters and gravy, dumplings, greenbeans, mac&heese,(gag) wilted lettuce salad, califlower salad, biscuts, cucumbers in vinegar, cornbread salad, many cassaroles (squash, tater, you name it) tater wedges, cheesy garlic grits, (yum) fried pork chops, much more, but those are the standards. And yes, lots of sweet tea!

I'll find my chocolate grtavy recipie this afternoon and get it posted for you. We eat it for breakfast over biscuts. YUM!! A fav of all the preggo gals in my family for years and years.

We have white gravy (milk gravy) served with fried chicken, mashed taters, chicken strips. and sausage gravy for biscuts and eggs.

One of our summer dishes for family get togethers is Taco Salad.

We make it with crushed doritos, salad, shredded cheese, tomato, taco meat, and western dressing/catalina dressing.

Mix all that together and we have our taco salad.

We also do baked beans but a little different. We make the beans but we add ground beef to them and a little honey and some bacon to them.

KatieLou

That is how we do our baked beans too. Beans, sausage or hamburgers, bacon, onion, brown sugar, and some spices

Omg. Garlic Cheesy Grits? Sounds yummy. We eat grits with cheeses and fried over easy eggs. Thats yummy. Ds1 is addicted to grits. He tried getting my fil to make him some once and he put sugar and cinnamon on them. YUK. Ds1 was so mad, he wouldn't have anything to do with them.

I love sausage gravy!!! Sweet tea too. Who said Cracker Barrel? Now I am craving Hashbrown casserole.

MMM cucumbers in vinegar, brisket, greens, yum yum yum. Sigh. I miss southern food almost (but not quite)as much as I miss New Mexican food. I often crave cheese enchiladas with red chile ( NOT chiI) and a big bowl of posole. And roasted pinons.

Wait. Chocolate gravy? What is it? Sounds like a great idea!

My stepdad always uses Nesquick in his, but here's a pretty simple recipe w/cocoa powder (I would at least double the recipe):

* 1/3 cup flour
* 2 heaping Tbsp cocoa powder
* 3/4 cup sugar
* 1 cup milk
* 1 tsp vanilla

DIRECTIONS

Stir dry ingredients together in a bowl, making sure to get rid of any cocoa lumps with the back of your spoon.

Add dry ingredients to a sauce pan with the milk.

Cook over medium heat until it boils (stirring constantly).

Remove from heat, add vanilla, and stir.

Another with butter, no vanilla:

Chocolate Gravy

INGREDIENTS

* 1/2 cup butter
* 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
* 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
* 3/4 cup white sugar
* 2 cups milk

DIRECTIONS

1. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add cocoa and flour; stir until a thick paste is formed. Stir in sugar and milk. Cook, stirring constantly, until thick.

KatieLou
04-21-2009, 01:36 PM
Here is mine.... we double it. Girls, you must try if you like chocolate! We even do it with Rice milk for the kids for you dairy free peeps. They love it.

2T cocoa
2T flour
1/2C Sugar
2C milk
1 stick butter

I wisk the dry ingredients together 1st in a bowl, and then add the milk. Wisk good untill all lumps are gone and pour in a M gravy pan. Heat on M untill good and thick. If it does not thicken well I will add more flour here. Pour in serving bowl and add the butter. Serve over buttered biscuts. YUM!

The chocolate gravy sounds yummy but I am not sure about eating it with biscuits. Although my mom used to get this WONDERFUL cane syrup sent from GA(she is from there) and we used to mix butter in it and dunk our biscuits in that. Freakin awesome. But the vendor that sold it went out of business and we haven't found a replacement that tastes the same. :(

HELLO!!! Have you ever accidentally got maple syrup onto bacon or ham? I don't even eat pancakes or waffles anymore, and I order maple syrup with my breakfast meats when we go out. YUM. Sausage and maple syrup.. but ham is the best. Fried brekkie ham with maple syrup.

Sweet&Savory is soo good. But if you have to go for just one...savory hands down, all the time.

We have real maple syrup here too. :hugegrin:

Maple syrup..... yucky, horrible, nasty stuff. Just the thought of the smell of it gives me a headache. Just the SMELL of it gives me a migrane. ANd no, I don't like syrup on my bacon or sausage. I don't eat ham either. Yucky. I will eat honey though...and even it smells horrible. I like savory, and I like sweet. Just not touching.

1. I HAVE heard of pulled pork and greens. You can get it at several restaurants near my house.

2. White gravy is white gravy, as opposed to brown gravy.

3. I am also from California. But I have lived in the South. Apparently, so have many of my neighbors.

I call white gravy "milk gravy" or "country gravy" and if it has sausage in it "sausage gravy".
