View Full Version : Where to find cloth diapers

I'm really interested in using cloth diapers on my son, Jude.
But the only ones I can seem to find in the stores are prefolds.
I went to Walmart the other day and only found pre-folds and I went to Babies-r-us and only found prefolds, cheap rubber pants, and scary pins.
Needless to say I picked up some prefolds, rubber pants, and scary pins and have been using them for three days now.
Prefolds are okay, but I'd like to find snappies and these rubber pants are goin to make me go crazy. They arent fun to put on, being how much my son kicks, and taking them off usually ends up getting poop on his leg.
I'd really like to find a place that sells all-in-ones like bum genius or at least a place that sells better covers, like the ones with velcro?
My biggest delima is not having a credit card, so I can't get things online and no-one seems to sell anything but prefolds. (No wonder so many people are using disposable diapers, most people I talk to have never even heard of things like all-in-ones)
Anyway I live in Florida, inbetween Tampa and Brandon, do you know anywhere nearby?

Looks like this lady sells locally in Tampa:
http://dnadiapers.com/
And it looks like this person sells out of Clearwater (I have no idea if that is close enough to you):

Hope that helps.

Do you have a paypal account?
Abbyslane.com (http://www.abbyslane.com/index.php) takes paypal and sells everything. I've used her for years and have been very impressed with her customer service, knowledge and selection.

I have seen Bum Genius all in ones at my local Target here in central FL.
ETA that if you have PayPal, you can order some all-in ones from Walmart to ship to the store for free.

Why don't you go get one of those prepaid visa's. I am sure Walmart is selling those everywhere now.
I don't have a credit card either but I have a Visa Check Card and those work just fine for buying online.

walmart prefolds are horrible! I sell cd's and have found that Bum Genious All in One's are the best! They are easy like disposable and hod alot.
Go to Bum Genious.com and do a local retailer search. There has to be someone in your area that sells them.
Also, don't be scared by the cost, you never have to buy them again so its worth it.

I second the perpaid visa or mastercard. Those are great. If you have any sewing abilty at all, I would say make them yourself.
I've got the Walmart prefolds as well, and really I don't mind them. I don't use the rubber cover though. I usually don't put a waterproof cover on Sam any more, so I use the prefolds, lay her down on the narrow end, twist the diaper, pull it up between her legs, and then secure it all with a long piece of double sided pink velcro around her waist.

USA Baby used to sell Bumkins and Fuzzi Bunz, last time I went they didn't have much of anything.
I recommend a prepaid Visa. I don't use credit cards either, but I do use a prepaid, it makes life a lot easier to have some electronic funds handy.
Also most of the WAHM sites have a layaway and will accept payments by mail.

And you can use regular detergent, I used Arm and Hammer.

Take the risk if you want to ( regular detergent ) but it eventually builds up a film and will no longe absorbe the liquids. Please do some homework online and see for yourself ;o)

I'd check out Whole Foods or Wild Oats (don't recall which it is) in Tampa. IIRC it's off 275 at Dale Mabry. I know the Whole Foods where I live and where I used to live carried the bumgenius and so does another store here that is similar.
You can also check out Craigslist if you don't mind getting some that are used.
I use Purex Free and Clear on my dipes with no problems - had build up with Cheer or All Free and Clear, but not the Purex.

I use regular laundry soap as well. I haven't had any issues with buildup, and my dd was in her mediums that I made for her for nearly a year. It just depends on what detergent you use, plus stripping them occasionally helps get rid of and prevent buildup.
What size aio's are you looking for? I have a stash of large kooshies and a few bumpkins, and also a whisper wrap cover.

I've got hemp and organic cotton prefolds that are nearly 7 years old and absorb as well as the day I bought them. Washed at least twice a week in arm and hammer with vinegar and baking soda.

Thanks everyone~
I checked the Target by me, they only sell the same pre-folds that Walmart and Babies-R-Us sells. The lack of diapers really does suprise me.
Anyway I figure I will go to Walmart and get a pre-paid Visa and just get some online.
Also I have been washing my prefolds with the clear Purex and they seem the same. But then again I haven't had them that long. Also I wash them by hand because we aren't allowed washers here and the laundromat charges 2.50 a load. Plus my grandma said they get cleaner and less worn looking if you wash them by hand.

Make sure you're using the right amount of detergent, too. You don't use nearly as much as you would for a normal load, especially if you have a high-efficiency machine.
Just for the record, I've used Gerber prefolds (the kind sold at Walmart) before, and they weren't bad at all, IMO. I prefer unbleached PFs, but Gerber PFs do the job. They also make great cleaning cloths.

You might want to spring for a wash in the machine every now and again, once the poo gets chunky hand washing is difficult to say the least.

They also make great back up inserts and hankerchiefs.

Also one more question. At Walmart they sold these cloths with little prints all over them. They said burpies on the packaging, but were made the same way as prefolds? Only difference between them and the prefolds I got is that they are just a tad smaller width wise and the fabric is a much closer stitch.
Are they a different kind of prefold, just sold as burpies? Or no?.

Now those, I would definitely not use as a diaper. They're not made with the same absorbency. They're only for catching some spit up, and they'd probably make decent cleaning rags as well, but I would not use them as a diaper.
