View Full Version : Thyroid Testing Question

I'm having my thyroid tested sometime next week, and I seem to recall reading here that there are certain levels to make sure one is tested for when having the thyroid tested - something that not all HCPs test for. I googled and found a loooong list of various thyroid screenings that are done, and I have no idea how where to go from there. I want to make sure I get a full screening when I go. What exactly is it that I need to ask for?

Also, we're going to be testing for blood sugar problems as well (the NP mentioned doing a full metabolic panel), so I'll be fasting before I go. That won't affect the results of a thyroid screen, will it?

I would request a TSH, free T4s and free T3s. If any of these tests are abnormal, you should also get the thyroglobulin antibodies test.

Good luck and please update when you can :)

Thank you! I'm calling tomorrow to schedule the test, so I'll make sure that's all included. I'll update when I get the results.

Meredith, I hope things go well for you.

Have you ever tried going gluten-free?

Judy, do you think that would be beneficial to hypothyroidism in general? What about Hashimoto's?

Tata, based on what I've read, there seems to be a connection between gluten and autoimmune disease, including Hashimoto's.

No kidding. Dammit! I heart gluten. Can't hurt to maybe try, though.

We've been transitioning to gluten free for Jett, and I'd considered it for all of us (except for DH, he won't go for it), but I'll definitely look into it. Thanks!
