Two elementary aged children were murdered today in the school community where I work. Crisis counselors will be on hand all week long to help the students and faculty deal with the tragedy as this is going to be an incredibly emotional week for all of us. As a new teacher, I've never dealt with anything like this before. The atmosphere is just heart wrenching and I'm hoping I can be strong for my students. If you would, please send thoughts and prayers for the family, friends and the community.

I'm so sorry for your community. Do they have the crisis counselors talk to faculty first to suggest ways to help?

Thank you, your thoughts and prayers mean a lot. Today is going to be a hard day.

Justicedog- we had a short staff meeting right after school yesterday, just to let us know that crisis counselors are available and told us the best way to help the kids is to keep the routine of a normal school day going for them. That is going to be difficult, I think.

Tiffers, that is so sad, but it sounds as though the school is trying to handle it appropriately.
Recently where I live 2 kids were hit and killed by a train, one of the kids was a volunteer in the first grade classroom. They just announced to the 1st graders that "K" had gone to heaven and wouldn't be in the class anymore, that was it. No warning for the parents this announcement was being made, no additional counseling help, nothing. My friend's son was in that class and came home terribly upset and didn't understand. My friend didn't even know to that point that it was "K" who had been killed.
