I need to remind myself of how bad Coke is for me because I'm having a hard time giving it up---especially after a hot day in the garden.
So go ahead----bash Coke!

Have a beer instead. It'll lower your blood sugar, which helps me kick the craving for sweets!

You can clean your toilet with Coke. Never drink something you can clean the toilet with?

You can clean the battery acid off a battery cable with a Coke.

It takes 14 mins on my elliptical machine to burn 140 calories (and that is on the lowest setting). Think of how many empty calories you are intaking and how much easier it would to burn what you already have without adding to it.
ETA: Wanna burn it faster on the machine? Bump up the resistance and feel the burn. A can of coke isn't worth it.

I weigh 267lbs, and Coke plays a big part in that.

Here is another thought: Simple sugar is poison. I know two pain management doctors who both tell their patients to get off pop and anything else that has simple sugars in it. Their pain is lessened by that alone.
IMO, simple sugars are the devil. They are delicious, but are evil and you pay for it later.

Yes, they are, still_me. Yes they are. It is seriously hard to give up.

You can dissolve teeth in it... imagine what that does to your intestinal tissue...

That is because your body is addicted to them. I swear in the next 20 years we are going to see food rehab places popping up everywhere. If I had the knowledge, I'd start one.

The phosphoric acid in soda results in lower bone density by depleting the bones of calcium. Sodas are also linked to chronic kidney disease and kidney stones.

Dh has almost 100 pounds on you (it was over 100, but he's lost 22 pounds since I've been on my anti-yeast diet), and Coke plays a huge part in his weight issues as well.

The first statement is the main reason that I only occasionally let ds have Coke.

I drink Coke Zero, which probably is evil all on its own but I LOVE the taste of it.

I love Coke. but I limit how much I drink. A 24 pack of coke will last me about a month. Mostly, if I haven't had one by 3 or 4 pm, I can't have one because of the caffeine. Not only does caffeine affect my headaches, it affects my sleep.
As far as the corrosive properties of Coke, phosphoric acid isn't as acidic as citric acid, and if the hydrochloric acid in your stomach acid doesn't affect your insides (since it is neutralized before it enters the intestines), then the phosphoric acid in soda pops won't.

I've read that, too. I think I recall reading that the email that circulated years ago about the horrible, terrible corrosive properties of Coke had several grossly over exaggerated statements on it. I heard on the radio that the most corrosive beverage out there is lemon-lime Gatorade, which has a ton of citric acid.

My rules for coke:
Never keep it in the house. We have tea and water in the house.
Coke and/or Ginger Ale is only brought into the house when someone is sick.
Don't deprive. I always get a fountain coke when we have chinese food or McDonalds, I can't eat either without coke.
Wean yourself. Don't stop suddenly, slowly back off, switch to diet if you have to while you're cutting down. (If Aspartame doesn't give you migraines!) Then stop, but make sure you drink tea and/or take advil so the caffeine withdrawl doesn't kick your ass.
IME, it's easier to stop drinking the diet, b/c it doesn't taste that good and it has artificial sweeteners in it that some people believe cause cancer, among other things.
It's easier to convince yourself to stop drinking a potential carcinogen.
Also, buy the cans rather than the 2 liter. Put 1 or 2 in the fridge and put the rest up in your closet, so it will be a hassel to get another one.
Replace the bubbles. I need the carbonation sometimes, I really think a carbonated drink soothes a sore throat better than a non-carbonated and I have a chronic sore throat.
My health food store sells carbonated, organic, low-sugar fruit juices in aluminum cans.
There is also Perrier, which is carbonated water, I like the lemon flavor. It's a little harsh at first, I add extra lemons. After a few glasses you're used to it.
Retrain yourself and don't get thirsty. Drink tea with your dinner every night, get out of the habit of soft drinks with dinner. Other than the eating out I mentioned, to me it's weird to have anything but tea or water with dinner.
When you're outside have a bottle of water with you, if you don't get super thirsty you won't crave a coke.

Not that it's healthy or anything, but I agree with ILM. I think life is too short to deprive yourself of all bad (but tasty) things all the time.

At least I'm not trying to use it as a spermicide (didn't I see that on Mythbusters???).
I'm going to have to stop buying it. If it's here, I'll drink it. So there, no more Coke in the house! If dh wants some, he knows where the store is. :)
I agree that life's too short to stay away from all tasty things, but man I wish I were better at self-moderation.

I know they say some of those myths aren't true, but way back in the day my great-grandfather used coke on the cars he worked on, I think he cleaned the windshields, it helped with keeping rain off- I think, back in the day before wipers. I think he also soaked small rusty parts in it. Of course this was waay back in the day oldschool coke, so God only knows what was in it back then.

It makes you fat! But I must admit I love my starbucks and diet sodas so that can be worse because of the fake sugers. Maybe I need a thread that tells me all the bad things of starbucks and diet drinks.
