Elise needs a new one because her old one is crap and falling apart (the cloth kind). I don't have a ton of money to buy a really nice one, but I found some decent priced ones at Walmart. Keep in mind, that this toybox will be in my living room for at least another year, *sigh* until we move into a 3 bedroom.
Here are the choices so far:
1. Disney Princess - $39.00 She is all into the Disney Princess stuff, so this is probably the one SHE would like the best.

2. La Petite - $69.88, This one is a little more expensive, but more neutral on the theme, and cute too!

3. Cherry Wood - On clearance for $40.00, This is probably the one I'm leaning towards. The color is completely neutral and won't stick out in my living room.

I would buy one made of solid wood in your local area.

Neutral or pink. She may come to hate the princesses in a few years. Something neutral will give you more life.

I like the last one--more practical in the long run. But PLEASE make sure it has a way to prevent the lid from coming down easily. I have seen one too many finger pinches from that kind of lid so they scare me.

if you cant get someone to make you one I would choose the solid wood one, it could be later used in her teenage room to hold things.

This ish. I like the cherry one best of the ones you posted, but I'd dig around craigslist and fleamarkets ( or ask my dad to build one) and get a toybox that can be used longer that can grow with her..

I would love to have my dad build her one, but I'm not sure how to make it so the lid won't slam down on little fingers. Maybe I'll look into that.

Why not let her pick the one she likes?

tiffers- they have specialty hinges that you can buy that lock when you open it up. They aren't that hard to find, if you want your dad to build it instead.

This. My husband made one for our kids. It looks like a treasure chest. But really, I don't like toy boxes. Things get lost in the bottom and they are never used again. I prefer the shelves with buckets.

There are tings you buy that go inside that close it slowly.

Safety hinge , I think Lowes and Home depot have 'em. And you could have dad make a cutouts where the lid meets the sides like in the toy box here:

ETA The thingies you are looking for are called lid supports.

I dont mean to hyjack the thread, but I am inheriting a solid wood one with a very heavy lid. It is at least two of those toy boxes (above) wide. Do those stopper hinges work for different weights and sizes? I am terrified of using it with my 18 month old dd. I was thinking of making it a seat till she got older, but I might not have to with those hinges.

you should be able to find safty hinges for any size toy box, my dn6, dn5, dn3, dn2 have a huge couch size one their dad built and he just used 4 extra large safety hinges.

I think I'm going to go with the last one for now. My dad is really backed up on projects and not in good health (and just got denied disability, again *sigh*).
