DS just called me up to his room because there was a monster in the corner. At first I tried turning the light on and telling him there was no monster. I quickly realized that wouldn't work.

Remembering something that I read here years ago, I quickly headed to the bathroom saying, "let's see what we can find to take care of that monster!" Wishing I still had that spray water bottle that he used to play with in the tub, I found some body spray and declared "Oh, I've found the Monster Spray! Do you want to get him or should I?"

He was more than happy to spray that monster three times and happily (so far...) went back to bed.

So... thank you to whoever gave me that idea! It worked great! (And I think tomorrow I will dump out the body spray and fill the bottle with water, because it STINKS.)

That's a really neat idea!

Yeah, it was the pear body spray here. If you put it on your belly, the monster can't touch you.

Might not want to fill it with water -- if there's no smell, the spray might lose credibility. Just a thought.

^^ I actually had that thought too last night, maybe I'll dump some out and dilute it with water. It really was a strong smell and about a half hour after I posted this he was awake again telling me he didn't want to sleep in his bed.

I don't know if it's because of the monster or because of the smell (which leads me to another thought... how do you teach a 3 year old to express themselves? When I ask him why he doesn't want to sleep in his bed all I get is " 'cause I no want to" and I don't know where to go from there...)

I used to use monster spray too. Only mine was a spritz of my perfume. LOL

We went to the store, found the "monster spray aisle" (or as many know it, the frebreeze aisle) and she picked out her own monster spray. She had a very fresh smelling room for a long time, LOL!

I would put a few drops of some oil in it, like lavender or rosemary for instance, which is soothing and he'll associate the smell with "no monsters" (and might only spray once a night YKWIM? He might wake up again but go back to sleep because he can still smell the spray "work").

I try to ask leading questions. Sometimes it works - sometimes not. My ds is 4.
