I'm officially thyroid med–free. I took my last dose about a week and a half ago. In January I started very slowly reducing it until I reached the point of cutting it out completely this month. Each time I'd reduce it, I'd feel really tired for a couple of days, but then I'd level out again.

I haven't been able to have blood work to see what my levels show, but I feel better than I have felt in ages. Of course, I have also changed my diet significantly, so it's difficult to know which has made the biggest difference. I suspect that, among other issues, I was allergic to my thyroid meds, and I also think they were bad for my adrenals.

I am still having a lot of problems with allergies and chemical sensitivities, though, and I haven't figured out how to "fix" that. I've researched supplements and have figured out what I want to try, but I haven't had the money to do so. Right now I can't even afford the probiotics that I was taking, which were definitely helping me to feel better.

I just thought I would update you!

I'm glad that you are feeling better, Judy. I'm definitely not where you are - I suppose I believe I really need the meds in order to function. I'm battling through a lot of personal life-changes right now, too, so I don't want to upset things that are otherwise stable for me.

I was recently approached by a friend online who believes there is a connection with thyroid problems (and perhaps the drugs for it?) and dental problems. I found that to be an interesting theory, since I obviously suffer from both.

Don't be too jealous. :p I'm not doing wonderful, just better than I was. The chemical sensitivities are still greatly limiting what I can do, which is depressing.

What's the theory regarding the thyroid (or drugs) and teeth?

I'm not jealous, Judy! I'm happy for you that you are doing better :)

Justicedog, I'm guessing my friend just thinks they are somehow connected: that people with thyroid issues typically suffer from dental issues. She didn't mention anyone else to me, but I know she has Graves disease and has been undergoing a lot of dental procedures similar to mine (root canals and fillings). I have Hashimoto's disease.

I've got hypothyroidism and am on syntroid and have fillings in most my teeth. I've got two cracked fillings, one on a large filling and I may need a root canal on it, so, I was curious.

I would say that strengthens her theory!

My filings are from before I started meds. Basically when I got my braces off I started getting cavities, before then, I had not problems. I always thought my bad teeth were caused by tetracycling meds.

I think it'd be tough to narrow things down. Gum problems seem to have started after the hypothyroidism, which could contribute to teeth problems.

There is a strong connection between mercury fillings and hypothyroidism. Especially among those who are actually allergic to mercury, which I am, in a study patients who had their mercury fillings removed had great improvement in their thyroid levels. If I had the money to have mine removed, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I've read that there are a lot of medical problems that may come from mercury fillings. Once I get the rest of the dental work I need now, I'll see if my insurance will cover replacement fillings with composite.

If you have this done, make sure to use a dentist who truly knows how to do it properly (preferably a natural health dentist). More damage can be caused otherwise. It may be coincidental, but my health really went down the shitter around the time I had one replaced (I already wasn't doing great before this). Because they didn't do it right, I ended up swallowing a chunk of the mercury.

One of the fillings being replaced will be an old metal one.
