Has anyone had their child's tongue tie corrected after infancy? Both of my kiddos are having it done next week and while the doc said they'd be fine after about 24hrs, I'd rather hear from mom's who have actually been through it. DS is 4.5yrs and I know he's going to be seriously ticked off about it. DD is 2yrs and I think will do better simply because she will have less idea of what's going on. They're both going under general anesthesia.

First of all why are they having it done? XH's dd had it done at the age of 4 and it was done because of speech issues and my mom had it done when she was 10 because of swallowing issues. XH is tongue tied and has never had a problem with it except he is a horrible kisser ;) My dds told me that their little sister did really well with it and was playing and running by the next morning. My mom says she just remembers it was hard to talk after it was done but it never really hurt.

Ds's is really short. He nursed well so they didn't do it as an infant, then they tried to eval his speech when he was 2 and decided that they'd have to re-eval at 3 which never happened. Now he's still not making an letter sounds or combos that require his tongue to really come forward. DD's isn't quite as short, but the ENT thought it was probably short enough to cause speech issues as well. After all the wait and see with DS, I decided to just go ahead with it now instead of going through everything again later with her.

I don't think they put XH's little girl under general though and my mom had local but she was 10yrs old and could sit still. Is general anesthesia your only option?

myself and both my sisters had it done when older for talking issues, I remember laughing gas and that was it. every single shild in my family has been tied to one degree or another, if I ever have another baby or when my sisters have children we are having it done asap after birth because it seriously interferes with breastfeeding.

Well, I guess I'm not sure if it's really general anesthesia. They said if the kids were really unhappy they'd give them some cherry liquid that would keep them sleepy for quite a while, otherwise they'd just breathe through a facemask, so maybe it's more of a laughing gas type sedation...no breathing tubes involved.

Babyblue, that sounds like my DH's family. LOTS of the kids had it done as infants. I thought it was just because they were born when it was a common thing to do, but now I see that it's really a family issue. Both of my kids also have bifurcated uvulas and I think that must have come from his side too since he has a strong Native American background and it is more prominant in that group.

I'm so glad to hear that it really is a quick healing procedure.
