View Full Version : Spinoff of parenting book suggestions - I need a mainstream one!

My brother and his girlfriend have zero parenting skills. They know this. They want to take a class but there aren't any available near them (I've looked & they've looked).

They are more mainstream, they yell (scream), they give a spank if they feel it's warranted (too often, if you ask me!) - the 3YO and 9YO's don't "obey".

I'm not aware of any books that might be helpful for them, they don't like to scream and spank but they feel they have no other options. They need more tools in their parenting tool box, or maybe 1-2 Really Good Tools that they can learn and practice very well.

Any suggestions?

Magic 1,2,3 is very mainstream, and time-out focused. I'm not sure if the Love and Logic books are mainstream enough for them. I haven't read them myself, but our school district had a series of parenting classes (of course during the day when I work, grr) and that was the book/approach they used.

How about How to talk so kids will listen, and how to listen so kids will talk, coupled with Siblings Without Rivalry, if that is an issue?'

Or Kid Cooperation.

I highly recommend both of these books. They are really straight forward and easy to read. There's nothing
radical in them.

I also really like 1-2-3 Magic.

I just started reading Playful Parenting, I've heard good things about it.

How to talk so kids will listen and listen so kids will talk, is my favorite parenting book!
