How long should a baby nurse and NOT need to go to other milks? If my baby self weans at say 16 months would I need to add other milk?

No. For the first year of baby's life, breastmilk is absolutely necessary. After that, breastmilk is beneficial for as long as you want to continue nursing but not absolutely necessary. Many people like to give cow's milk after the first year as a substitute for a baby who no longer nurses or who nurses less, but it's not necessary. Protein, fat, and calcium that can come from milk are necessary, but you can give it in other foods and just give baby water to drink.

Jacksmommy-what other foods can I give to replace cow milk? I gave him some yesterday and he got hives around his mouth. He does the same with yogurt.

Here are some ideas. I can't find much on fats - other than a recommendation for avacado, but you could google it.

He may tolerate milk, cheese and yogurt that are goat origin http://askdrsears.com/html/3/t032400.asp Of course they are much harder to come by but gaining in popularity. My family consumes tons of soy products (organic, non-GMO as soy is a delicate crop that is commonly GM or sprayed with chemicals), we do not buy cow's milk at all.

If you are meaning what foods can you give to replace the nutrition in cow's milk I would say fresh fruits, vegetables, beans and meat. As a nation the bovine industry has really sold us on the idea that cow products are necessary for health and that simply is not true.

I think I may try a little goats milk too. He seems to do ok with mild cheddar and mozarella.

Jacksmommy-thanks for the links. BTW I gave him avacado around 7 months and he got major hives all over his face.
