Hello,
I've been BF my newborn for a couple of months. For approximately a month and a 1/2 now, I have been experiencing what I would describe as a searing pain in my right breast. It comes in episodes, lasting about 1/2 an hour or so. It started out occurring infrequently, but now the episodes are more frequent and the pain has gotten more intense. This is the 4th child that I have BF, and I have never experienced this before.
I've pretty much ruled out letdown as a cause because it doesn't happen during let-down and the pain I feel during let-down is different. I don't believe it's an infection because I don't have any other symptoms.
The only other thing I've noticed is that I have a small, raised bump on top of my actual nipple, the center of which looks white-ish or possibly slightly yellow-ish (it's hard to tell).
Now, my right nipple has hurt pretty much since I stared BF my baby. I think that may be because he had a bit of trouble latching on properly at the beginning. Even now, two months later, my nipple still hurts when he latches on, even though he is latched on correctly. Sometimes, I dread feeding him on that breast because it hurts! The pain I feel in my breast, though, seems to be radiating from within, and it seems to be happening throughout my breast. It may also be worth noting that my son seems to have a pretty strong suction, although I honestly don't recall how he compares to my daughters in that sense.
Lately, when I feel the searing breast pain come on, I sometimes simultaneously feel a tingling in the back of my head. It's not painful, it's just a slight tingling, but, as I said, it occurs simultaneously with the pain in my breast.
I went to see my PCP because the pain is so bad. She asked me to observe the pain for two weeks and see if I notice any correlation between BF and the pain (such as if it occurs during let-down, etc.) and suggested that if it's still occurring and I don't believe it's related to BF, we do a diagnostic mammogram to make sure nothing abnormal is going on in there. She did do a breast exam and didn't find anything abnormal.
I apologize this is so long, but I wanted to know if anyone has experienced anything like this or has any idea what it may be.
Thanks in advance for reading!
