Many women see fertility signs start to return without quite getting to the point where they start having periods again for a while. This can be frustrating, if you are trying to conceive, and annoying, if you are not.
It is just what your doctor said- unlikely, but possible. It is wise to choose some method of birth control that you can live with, just in case, unless your situation is that you would be delighted if you got pregnant.
If you did ovulate, you would indeed see a period in about two weeks, unless you were pregnant.
However, while breastfeeding, it is common to see the body try to ovulate without quite getting there, and then NOT seeing a period. Some women do have periods by four months. Others don't see one the whole time they breastfeed.
I recommend getting the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. Check it out from the library, get a used copy, whatever- it's really helpful. You will not ovulate repeatedly without menstruating- but you can see cervical mucus change and look like you're ovulating, repeatedly.
It seems to work as though your body is trying to ovulate, and the breastfeeding interferes at the last minute. But whatever, it is wise to use condoms or whatever works for you until you are ready to risk a pregnancy.

Thanks!!! I know a lot about fertility (it took us 3 years to get pregnant with DS#2). We were on a waiting list for a frant for IVF when I got pregnant. I had elevated prolactin levels when we were trying which caused me to have very light periods. My DH has a severely low sperm count, he even had 2 different semen analysis show no live sperm. We would be ok if I got pregnant again, but seeing as it took us so long last time it doesnt seem likely. I was just curious :)
