My sister called me earlier today because she is worried about her 1 month old baby boy. He has been sleeping a lot more than usual, eating less, low grade fever, and vomiting. I told her to call her pediatrician and see what they say. So she called and they sent her up to the ER.
Well my sister finaly called me from the ER and they had to do a urine test on him and they had to put an IV in. The IV wound up having to go on the top of his head:(
The test results just came back and they are admitting him to the hospital. He will be having more tests done along with a spinal tap. He has a severe infection in his bladder. They are thinking that his kidneys aren't working properly and that he might have some kind of defect. They also think there might be more going on that they don't know about yet.
He is for sure going to be in the hospital for 2 days for observation and antibiotics.
Please send some prayers for my sister and her baby boy. They could really use the comfort right now.
I will update later when I know more.

Well we haven't to much more on the baby. I know he has developed a new symptom since last night. He is now screaming and crying when he eats. His vein for his IV collapsed today so they had to get team of specialists in there to do a new IV for him. That will be the 7th time they have had to stick him for an IV.
Thankyou everyone for the prayers they are greatly appreciated.

I got a little update. The doctor has decided to put the baby on Prevacid immediately for the screaming and crying while eating. They think he has reflux. They have also said that they think his Bladder infection was caused by him not getting circumcised(sp?) I'm not sure about if I agree with that but they are still going to do more tests just to be sure there isn't anything else going on.

Update. My sister has been keeping in contact with me about the baby. He is still in the hospital. They did an Ultra Sound on his kidneys yesterday and my sister got the results today. He has what they call Kidney Reflux. They are going to have to do another test on him today to see how severe the kidney reflux is. Depending on those results that will determine the next step. If it is to severe then he will have to have surgery. If it isn't to severe then he will have to to be on long term antibiotics until he gets better. For now though he is definately going to have to be in the hospital for 1 week.

DGS#2 had this and was on antibiotics for quite some time...the good news is that he outgrew it, so tell your sis to hang in there!

Don't let the Dr's tell you it is because he is not circumcised, that is not true at all. I am glad that found the issue and it is not more serious.

I'm sorry. In spite of how bad it looks, an IV in the scalp is actually a lot less uncomfortable for the baby than an IV in the hand or foot.

My daughter had many of the same symptoms when she was one week old (she even had several blown IVs and a PICC line that slipped). She also had Vesicoureteral Reflux. The next thing they should do is a VCUG test to determine what degree the reflux is. It's graded from 1-5, with 5 being the worst.
My dd was graded 1 reflux in her left kidney. After staying in the hossy for a week, they put her on a low dose of Bactrim. She stayed on it for a year before we weaned her off. She had a VCUG repeated every year until the reflux resolved, as low grade reflux often does. She just had her last VCUG last month, with negative results! Two of my neices also had the same problem. My son's friend is also living with grade 5 reflux in one kidney and grade 2 in the other. He's a very happy and pretty healthy 6 year old.
Your nephew is in my throughts and prayers! It's some scary stuff to live through...especially when they are so little!

My youngest has VUR (Vesicoureteral reflux), grade 3 on both sides. I think they consider to do surgery with grade 4 or 5. We discovered it because she had a UTI at 9 months. She is on daily antibiotics for the past two years and is doing fine. Basically her valves are defect, which means that urine is pushed back towards the kidneys each time she pees. That makes a UTI more likely, and with it the possibility of kidney infection. The condition often self corrects though. Our friends have twins with both VUR and they opted not to give daily antibiotics. One twin never got an infection, the other did several times and she has one kidney that only functions 30%. They eventually got better on their own at around age 4.

Correct, with VUR your nephew could be circ'ed or not, it doesn't matter.

I feel so sorry for the poor, sweet baby. :( Prayers sent his way. His mommy did a good job catching the trouble. I probably would have thought it was a cold or something minor and waited a few days, probably making it worse.
Also, I'm another one that agrees with Hamm.

And yet another update. This time it is good news:) My sisters baby is getting discharged from the hospital today. His test results came back for the Kidney reflux today and the test results came back normal. He doesn't have Kidney reflux. So that is good news. He still has to get antibiotics for the next few days. So he will be going to the doctor everyday for an antibiotic shot until his 11 days are up. My sister is just very happy that it wasn't anything serious and that he is getting better.
Thankyou everyone for all the prayers and good thoughts and info on the Kidney Reflux. I really appreciate it.
