This 60-year-old woman I know takes a whole slew of heavy-duty medications on a regular basis and even falls asleep while washing her hair in the sink, doing laundry, squatting down to do something, etc. She is "not with it" most of the time, yet she still drives.

Anyone who has ridden with her refuses to do so again because she drives so horribly, and she has wrecked her car twice fairly recently (once totaled it), claiming that an animal ran out in front of her the first time and that she hit a pothole the second. She has been pulled over a number of times and has been given a breathalyzer, but the cops always let her go because, of course, she doesn't test positive for alcohol.

I'd rat her out to the DMV. Here in California, there's a report you can make which asks DMV to review a driver's qualifications. Some other states have similar mechanisms.

Another option would be to quietly let the local police know that she has a problem because of her meds. She's not testing positive for alcohol, but she's still driving while impaired, and in most states, that's illegal.

Tell the authorities, she could kill someone. Or does she have family you know of that could compel her to give up her license and car.

She would never willingly give up her license and car. Never.

Would it be best to contact the DMV or the police department (city) and sheriff's department (county)?
