I get to have a dog tomorrow!
The dog I picked up out of the road and had to give back to her family that doesn't really want her is coming to visit tomorrow. I'm going to pick her up in the morning and take her back in the evening. It's supposed to be a beautiful day which is even better. DD and I went and got her a ball, a rope bone, some treats, and a bit of lunch for her visit (they leave food out for her) and the plan is to just give her a great day. I've tried to make sure both kids know it's just for the day (DS completely gets it, not so sure about DD) and DH is completely supportive. He sees it as a way for me to "have" a dog and for him to NOT have a dog. It's such a dorky thing to be excited about, but I'm more worked up than the kids.

I really think we will. Even if it's a total flop, she'll still get to run around in a big backyard instead of being chained up all day.

I wish your DH would let you keep the dog. Any chance that he might change his mind?

I like to believe anything is possible. I don't think it's likely though. Her chances improve if he agrees that she isn't a heavy shedder and doesn't have a strong doggy smell. Her size will work against her since she's more medium than small (can't scratch that wood floor you know). I think deep down he has a fear of dogs. We were at Petsmart the other day and a big dog got to barking and he immediately started shielding DD and talking about not wanting a big dog to carry off his baby. It was not a snarling angry bark, just regular big dog barking. He talks big and tough about dogs, but I think they really make him uneasy. Maybe this will break him in slowly.

Having a fear of dogs can be pretty hard to overcome especially if he was bit or attacked by a dog as a child. My brother was bit by a dog as a child but it did not stop him from loving dogs but my XH's dd is afraid of ALL dogs since she was very young and she has never been bit or attacked. She just screams and cries if there is a dog around and XH loves dogs and if he had his way he would have a yard full of strays.

Judy, she's a shaggy terrier type mutt and her shoulder comes up to a little below my knee. I'd say she's probably in the 30ish lb category (??).
I know DH has never been attacked. He just has this idea that big dogs are vicious (don't even TRY to reason with him about the bully breeds). Other dogs are just a nuisance and they all have issues in his mind.
Reasons he doesn't like dogs:
they poop, bark, stink, shed, cost money, make travel difficult, have "issues," and scratch up the wood floors he put in.
As you can see, I'm up against a pretty set mind.

Meh, kids do all of these things too:
they poop, bark, stink, shed, cost money, make travel difficult, have "issues," and scratch up the wood floors he put in.
It is cool that you and the kids get to see the dog though.

Strangely, dogs fed on a raw meat and bones diet do not stink. They don't even have dog breath. And several popular breeds don't shed at all. Dogs fed on raw meat poop less, too.
They do, however, cost money and sometimes have issues. And travel is it's own challenge.
And I think it's wise to be wary of dogs. They are dogs, and they are not genetically distinct from wolves. They aren't going to carry off his baby in a pet store, however.

Awwww, she sounds precious. I had a mutt that was the sweetest thing ever. She was a chow mix and was 26 pounds at her largest. Man, I loved that dog.
Keeping the nails cut will help with the potential damage to the floors, and keeping her brushed will help with the shedding.

Oh trust me, y'all are preachin to the choir, though I didn't know about the raw meat diet. I think someday he'll come around. If I were to say that I was getting a dog and I'd do all the care, he wouldn't put up a fuss, but I know there would be some resentment. There's no way he'd just open his heart and accept the dog. He'd probably ignore it and that's not the kind of "pack" I want to bring a dog into. Now, when DD gets old enough to ask with her big green eyes and sad pouty face....that might be a whole different story ;)
