This is so very sad and way too close to where I live. I actually have freinds who have kids who go to this school. So far nothing has really scared me about the swine flu but I am starting to get a bit worried. Hopefully after the autopsy we will know more.

I did not like the comment one person said about how this can be prevented if it is caught early. This child had no symptoms so does it mean we should be taking our kids to the doctor every day or checking for temps everyday? I feel bad for the parents if they actually read that comment.

Yes, if she had no symptoms, how could it be caught early?? Doesn't make sense to me.

It's very scary when Aaron, my 4yr old, and Cassidy, my 9 month old, get sick. They both have Asthma and everytime they get coughs I worry especially since Cassidy has been hospitialized twice in February with RSV and has had lots of lung infections, and Aaron has had many bouts with pneumonia this year also. Luckily my older kids are healthy and rarely get sick.

DD2 had pneumonia several times when she was little but the last time she was really sick was about 3yrs ago. DD1 had not gotten fever since she was 6yrs old but she got the flu the first week of school this year. So far DD3 has not really had anything. I have not gotten sick for while so hopefully we all continue to stay healthy too.

That's so sad. :(

Schools are filled with germs. I stayed sicker when I was teaching than I did when I worked in a hospital.

This is very sad. My heart goes out to the parents.

However, I hope this serves as a serious warning to all those morons who still insist on sending their sick kids to school. I have had it with parents who do this. I have no qualms in confronting them over their behavior.

Hi Bella I was just thinking about you.

I just read the news that a 45yo RN just died of the swine flu as well. We did just recently loose an RN at our sister hospital but they said it was from a pulmonary embolism so I am not sure if they are talking about the same person.

One of the hallmarks of influenza is rapid onset of symptoms. The only way to catch it earlier is to know that you have been exposed and assume that you will get sick. I can guarantee a hospital or doctor will do nothing for you if you go in and say you were exposed.

This story is also characteristic of influenza. Almost everyone will contract this disease and a percentage will die. People scoff at the low percentages of deaths and accuse others of over-reacting to this pandemic. But when it is your child or your loved one percentages do not matter.

I agree.

How about those parents who don't have family nearby and who cannot afford NOT to show up to work? It's easy to think that only parents who couldn't care less send their ill kids to school with a good dose of ibuprofen, but that is not always the case. In this economy, with so many jobs where so many "replacements" are just waiting to get that job, people might feel pressured into doing this.
