I get e-newsletters updating my pregnancy each week (32 weeks now) and this is the ad on the newsletter. Pretty slick of nestle to boldly compare breastfeeding to formula feeding as if they were the same.

More links to sites like this one (Breastfeeding.com) and La Leche League need to be attached to these newsletters rather than nestle ads. But, I suppose it always comes down to $$$.

Ugh. That is terrible and I hope that the BF groups move to have those ads removed. They need more columns labeled "Antibodies", "Cell Mediated Immunity" and "All the other components of breastmilk yet to be discovered".

Personally, I think they should add a column that says
" Results in a 50% higher risk of infant death" and have all formulas checked.

This!! I remember being so worried about SIDS then reading that bf babies are at a much lower risk (can't remember the stats, too lazy to look them up- sorry). So pedis harp on not allowing your baby to sleep on their stomach but have NO PROBLEM recommending that a mother feed baby formula.
Can we get a surgeon general warning on cans of formula listing of all the problems associated with formula feeding? NO. The government and medical schools have been bought by formula manufacturers.
PS I understand that there are many many instances in which formula is medically required. I am grateful that this option exists for those babies and mine should I ever need it.

I totally agree! I wish people would try and take more responsibility for the future. I also agree about it being good that it's available, BUT.... that ingredient list just looked very disturbing O_o...

well i was just down in South America and saw a sign at a little diaper/formula/babyclothes store I should have taken a picture to put on here but it said
NESTLE Follow your Maternal Instict (Picture of Nestle Good Start )
What ?????? I was very upset to see that. YOUR MATERNAL INSTINCT IS TO BF!!! this is exactly what everyone is talking about Nestle.... in a country as poor as ecuador, they should not be pumping money into advertising formula... it is ethically irresponsable.

WOW. I think that formula marketing in countries with water quality issues is criminal. I cringe to think about the number of babies around the world that have died from formula provided to indigenous mothers that unknowingly mixed it with tainted water.

I find it interesting that formula companies do this. I was at my local LLL meeting in Jan and I found out something interesting. Formula feeding is not considered a SECOND option, it's down the list at fourth.
#1 Breastfeeding
#2 Pumping
#3 Milk Banks
#4 Formula Feeding
I didn't even know there were milk banks.

Plus Snuggle Time and Skin to Skin Contact
Trying to get poor countries to spend money on the formula is also ethically wrong... not to mention the dirty water. I didn't even think of that! BFing would also greatly improve malnutrition problems.

I have read that some rural cultures drink the formula themselves and continue to breastfeed! Hopefully that happens often!
