Arnica montana gel really is miraculous for bruises.

I find the best sort is that mixed with witch hazel (as opposed to alcohol). Witch hazel is a natural astringent that also helps heal bruising and reduce swelling.

Arnica montana may be sold as homeopathic medicine. The best I've found is gel that contains only arnica 30x, witch hazel and the gel medium. Some formulations have other homeopathics in them, but they are not as effective (in my opinion).

Non-homeopathic arnica should not be used on open wounds or taken internally, as it can be poisonous.

For small bruises or muscular pain, massage the gel in several times a day.

For large bruises and strains, apply a thick layer of arnica gel, cover with plastic wrap, secure with gauze and let sit overnight.

Apply ice packs 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Heat really shouldn't be used on bruises and muscle sprains/strains, but if it helps you feel better keep the time limited to 20 minutes and then alternate with ice. Wet heat is better than dry heat.

Arnica gel and witch hazel should not be used around the eyes, both are for external use only.
