This question is not regarding my baby, but my friends baby
who is overseas. He is currently 5 months old, and in the 90 %
regarding weight. Mother is nursing 4 times a day and supplements
other feedings. Baby recently had diarrhea, and doctor told her
that the reason was "her" milk? And asked her to supplement
w/more formula. This sounded very strange to me...In what cases
do babies have diarrhea because of the mothers milk?

Hi I am Elaine Matheny from WV and I am answering your question posted to WWW.breastfeeding.com. What you describe about your friend's 5 month old doesn't make much
sense....Babies NEVER get diarrhea from their mother's milk or from what the mother eats.
Any diarrhea is caused by a dangerous virus that kills many babies worldwide in
many
countries.
It is in the water usually and that is why babies do so much better by breastfeeding. If
the mother wishes to do so, she can possibly increase her milk and go back to exclusive
breastfeeding. What country is she in? On the La Leche League Web Page,
http://lalecheleague.org, you can find LLL leaders all over the world. If the mother's
milk supply had gone down then the formula will help the baby keep gaining. The problems
occur when the babies don't tolerate the formula well or get sick from the water or germs
in the formula. Please let me know what else I can do to help.
Sincerely,
Elaine Matheny, BS, IBCLC, LLL Leader
