First baby had milk allergy. Should I quit dairy during second pregnancy?

QUESTION: I am 33 weeks pregnant with my second child. My first child diagnosed with milk allergy and improved after I eliminated milk products from diet.

My question is, should I be restricting dairy products before the birth of this baby, after birth or wait and see if the baby develops any problems?

Thank you

Ray,

Congratulations on your second pregnancy. It is such a great idea for you to ask questions while pregnant!!

It is believed that a mother should avoid overindulgence of certain products in pregnancy especially if there is a known family history of allergy. An infant with a predisposition for allergy may become actively sensitized in utero. It is the protein in milk that babies are allergic to; therefore, once your baby is born, continue to avoid milk products and introduce them into your diet a little at a time while you watch for signs of allergy. For example, watch for eczema on the skin, irritability, and discomfort. If you see any of these signs and you suspect a reaction to a milk product that you have recently ingested, eliminate it from your diet and try again at a later time.

I would recommend that you keep in touch with a nursing mother's group in your area for support. Congratulations once again and good luck!
