Pumping at 25 weeks pregnant

NAME: Becky
BABY'S NAME: not yet
BABY'S AGE: 25 weeks pregnant
BABY'S PRESENT WEIGHT:
BABY'S BIRTH WEIGHT:

QUESTION: We recently bought a breast pump and decided to  see what it felt like. To my surprise, I woke the next morning to find dried milk on my breasts and my arm. I am now concerned because I am only 25wk pregnant and am worried that when the baby arrives in April I won't produce milk. What should I do ?

Dear Becky,

Your body began producing colostrum when you were 16 weeks pregnant. Your body will produce milk when your baby is born. The reason you should not be using a breast pump now is that too much nipple stimulation will increase your oxytocin levels and can cause premature labor. Put your pump away till the baby comes!
