My husband and I have a five year old daughter (Ashley). When we found out
that we were pregnant with our son (Daniel now 9 months old), we explained
to Ashley, 4 at the time, that we are going to have another baby. She was
very excited. She would take her dolls and try to take care of them like it
was a real baby.
My husband and I talked to her all about taking care of a
new baby, we went to the sibling classes, bought new baby books, and everything we could think of about having a newborn at home. I was in the bedroom nursing Daniel one morning and Ashley came in and
gave me a horrible look. I asked her what was wrong, she said in a very
disgusted voice , her exact words were, "Mom, why is Daniel eating your
boob". My husband and I looked at each other and realized, we never
explained to Ashley about breastfeeding. We never thought anything about it
because I breastfed Ashley. Well we explained it to her. From that day on
whenever I would breastfeed Daniel she would get, in her own words, "grossed
out" and leave the room. We tried to tell her how breast feeding worked,
where the milk came from, but we could never get her to understand. We had
a lot of laughs out of that story.
If you have an older child and plan on having another baby, remember to
explain about breastfeeding. To this day she does not want to talk about it
at all.
