What do you do when you have a baby that really needs to nurse
and you are uncomfortable about plugging him in in front of company? This is my story of
an event that occurred after the birth of my second son.
Joshua, was four weeks old at the time and my 16-year-old
former foster son came over to see the new baby. In the middle of our visit the baby began to
vocalize a very strong need to be fed. Feeling a little uncomfortable about getting him
started in front of a teenage boy and the embarrassment it might cause him, I performed all
the usual juggling and distracting techniques I knew. Finally, I realized there was no way
around it and I offered my baby the breast. Immediate silence, I felt my face get red. Then the hormonal effect took over. I relaxed and our conversation resumed.

Janice's seven sons (that's right.. 7!) Jai 21, Joshua 17, Isaac 14, Solomon
10, Elliot 7, Gabriel 2, and little Samuel 6 months. |
We were discussing preparations for my sister's wedding and I asked him to pick me up a
bottle from the drugstore. I was having a perm the next day and my husband would be with
the baby. Imagine my surprise when he proceeded to lecture me on the benefits of
breastfeeding, information he had gathered from a TV program the night before. He ended
his speech with a stern admonishment to at least try breastfeeding! Struggling to keep
from laughing I finally had to ask what he thought I was doing at the present time.
His turn for a red face!
This little episode is something I keep in the back of my mind for those times I feel
apprehensive about nursing in front of certain people.
