I bragged to my best friend in kindergarten, "My
mommy's gonna have a baby."
She replied, "Mine, too."
My mother later explained that sometimes a person becomes envious and
will not be truthful. She advised me not to brag too much and to
accept my friend's jealous make-believe stories. Imagine Mom's shock
when she and my friend's mother met in the hospital for the births of
their daughters!
Both babies were born on the same day, and our kindergarten class was
so excited to hear about the new additions to our families.
During Show and Tell one day when the babies were a few weeks old, my
friend bragged to the class, "I get to help give my baby sister a
bath."
"Me too!" I chimed. "And I get to help change my baby
sister's diaper," I proudly informed them.
"Me too!" my friend boasted. She told the class, "I get
to help feed my baby sister a bottle."
I remained silent. My teacher asked, "Rachel, do you help feed
your sister?"
"No," I replied, "When she gets hungry Mommy just pulls
out a big fat boob."
Twenty-five years later I'm pleased to be following in my mother's
footsteps as I breastfeed my 3-month-old daughter. What a wonderfully
rewarding experience!
