Vignettes of Nursing Humor VI

Great breastfeeding stories that will make you smile

I breastfed my daughter, Krista until she weaned herself at under 24 months of age. Like most older babies who nurse, she tried to bite my nipple when teething (my sharp cry of pain put an end to that just after two times); she'd try to pull up my top in public when she got the urge; and she had her own word for "nursing"  -  "NUMACE".

I'll never forget the time I was sitting in my parents' family room nursing Krista who was about 16 months of age. I had just positioned her in front of my "other" breast. My teenage brother came in the room, said, "Hi" and started bounding up the staircase to his bedroom, until he was stopped in his tracks.

To all our surprise Krista' returned the greeting with a hearty, "Hi, Steve, I'm numacing on this side now!"

That was 24 years ago, and I'm proud to say Krista is now numacing her 3-month-old son, Evan.

We had explained to my 3 year old in great detail that our new baby would drink "mommy's milk" when he came home from the hospital. He was not real sure about this, because he really wanted to feed the baby himself, but we thought he had a pretty good handle on what was going to happen.

The day I got home from the hospital, I was feeding the baby while sitting on my bed. Cameron crawled up on the bed and stuck his face right next to the baby's to see what he was doing. He moved around a couple times to get a better view and poked my breast to see if there really was milk in there.

Then he sat up and very firmly asked his father, "Daddy, may I please have some COW'S milk in a SIPPY cup?"

Cameron breastfeeds his doll, because "she just would not drink out of her bottle."

The other day my 3 year old was again watching our baby nurse. When the baby let go for a minute, Cameron looked at my breast and said, "what is that on your best (breast for adults)?"

I told him those were the milk ducts and you could see them because they were currently full of milk. Of course, he decided to reach out and poke one and a little milk squirted out. He was amazed.

This led to a long explanation of how milk works. Mr. curious now understands that when the baby sucks, the milk moves down so the baby can drink it by pressing on the milk ducts with his tongue and lips. That seemed sufficient, even for Cameron.

Later, I allowed Cameron to hold the baby's tummy so he would not roll. I went for a wash cloth to wash the baby's face and chest after a first run at cereal. When I came back, one side of the baby's chest was all covered with slobber. I asked Cameron how the baby got all wet.

Cameron told me that baby Jack was pretending to be mommy and he was pretending to be the baby. And he was very unhappy that the pretend mommy did not send any milk when he sucked with his tongue. I think he was even more upset when I just died laughing.

When my son Zach was 2 months old he wanted to eat every two hours so you can imagine that he did most of his nursing while I was still half asleep.

I usually leak pretty heavily when he starts crying so I wear my bra and nursing pads to bed. One particular night I heard him crying so I stumbled out of bed and took off my bra to prepare for the feeding. I happened to notice that he had a dirty diaper because I could smell him.

Not wanting to fully wake him for the diaper change, I gingerly removed his nightie and proceeded to apply a fresh diaper. I noticed that he was completely soaked after just changing him and figured that he had peed while I was fumbling for a clean diaper. I removed his diaper again but by this time he was fully awake kicking, laughing and squealing. Before I could put another diaper on him a fresh explosion of poop flew out everywhere and you guessed it, he was kicking the goo all over the place!

Somehow I managed to get that mess cleaned up, slapped another clean diaper on him and snapped his jammies back up. I finally picked him up to nurse and he was wet again I couldn't believe it, but this time his jams were completely soaked.

I had been trying to do all this in a very dimly lit room so I wouldn't wake him, but when I finally had the sense to turn the overhead light on, I looked down to find that both my breasts were practically down pouring on him!

It was not one of my better moments, but I can look back on it now and really laugh!
